How many of you guys cover your trucks that sit outside?

I've read the pros and cons about covering a car, however I do very little driving, and my truck will not fit in the garage. I'm considering a felt lined, outdoor cover to keep it out of the sun. I'd be putting it on a clean truck, and would remove it if there is wind or inclement weather. The objective would be to keep as much sun off of it as possible.

Thoughts and/or recommendations?

 

Felt lined canopy works great. Get a lighter color - white or beige

 

Canopy or cover? A canopy isn't permitted unfortunately.

 

Personally I don't like covering vehicles, if the truck is a little dusty and you cover it it can work like sandpaper against the finish.

I just leave them outside and keep them washed and waxed. The 12 year old 1st gen (bought new) has never been in the garage and the paint still looks good.

 

I think what worries me is the single stage paint used on the white trucks. Love the Off Road wheels on the 1st Gen!!

 

Thanks, sold it to my son, he nixed the old Ivan Stewart wheels because it looked like he was driving "dad's truck". Gave him a good deal on the truck and the wheels.

Is it still single stage paint on the white trucks?

 

I believe black white and red are single stage. That's why I refuse to ever own another white Toyota.

 

My 99 was red, that thing would turn orange at the blink of an eye. Never again with red.

2-3 coats of wax a year and you are fine...no need for a cover unless you are in the south like me.. but I just keep it waxed..

 

Can someone prove that the white/reds are single stage paint? Polish your truck and show us the white/red paint on a polishing pad. I highly doubt any company is using single stage paint still.

*Edit* Apparently, at least up until the previous generation whites were single stage WITH clear coat mixed in. So when it dries, the clear up migrates to the top because it's lighter. So there still is a clear coat, not like the old-school single stage paint.

We just need to see if they're still using it for 3rd gens, but most likely since we're using the same frame/suspension as 2nd gens...

 

Which is exactly why I sought a white one

I'll never have peeling clearcoat, and the paint is easy to keep looking sharp, easy to touch up, easy to match if a panel needs repair.

As I understand it, the clear is mixed with the paint on white, and perhaps black also. Only the metallic paints are two-stage according to what I've read, but I could be wrong.

 

Would you like to see the white chalk running down my back window off the paint?

 

I did when I was working in southern Florida. Sun would blister paint faster than you could wax it.

 

That's from neglect, not single stage paint.

 

Sure, is yours a 3rd gen? Although the more I read about it, I wouldn't doubt that they kept the same paint.

Also why is your paint flaking off like chalk?

That is nice to have in case of a hail storm, I was throwing blankets on my roof and hood overnight when it started to hail.

 

Super White (040) is not a single stage. ED coat, primer coat, base coat and clear coat.

In fact, I don't know of any single stage colors on the Taco.....at least on the gen 2 rigs
