Crank pulley small wobble + motor knock

    If the three pulley bearings were bad, the tensioner pulley bearing is not far behind. The bearing is easily replaceable; the size is 17X40X17.5 (ID X OD X Width). I replaced mine with a Nachi 5203-2NS bearing. Stick with Japanese, German, or Swiss brand.

    I have not at all but it was clear that the previous owner did lol

    I bought it at 180k and I'm not at 190

    Pretty much replaced everything so far lol

    Be careful with rotella.... There is Rotella T, rotella T4 ... both 15w-40.... Rotella T is a diesel oil, (as is Rotella T6) Both of which work GREAT in motorcycles (they are both jaso ma / ma2 certified) and because of that they have NO energy conserving additives (makes friction pieces very slippery, no bueno for wet clutches in motos) , which a gas vehicle motor should have.


    On shell's site the ONLY rotella product they claim to be ok to use in gas vehicles is their T6 "Multi Vehicle" which i can almost guarantee has the energy conserving additives vs the regular T6.

    That stated.... NONE OF THE ROTELLA T oil products meet the requirements of our motor. Yes, you read that right. NONE meet the ILSAC GF-5 grade.

    Needless to say, rotella oil does NOT belong in our truck, let alone any Xw-40w oil (unless you are high speed WOT constant desert running -very hot ambient temps- where oil temps are higher, which only a select few do)

    Dont get me wrong, i LOVE rotella T and T6 oils i use them EXCLUSIVELY in my wet clutch motorcycles.... but in our trucks NOPE, mobile 1 full syn 0w-30 only.

    I used the rotella t4 which was reccomended by @Speed Freek and a few others who swear by it.
    I'll have to look on the bottle to see what it says.
    I know the Subaru guys only run rotella

    Im not saying that it wont work. Its great oil. But its likely not meeting the specs set out by toyota for our motors, and when the oil is the same price as a standard car oil, why risk it?

    Any particular reason you're using 15w oil? Comes from the factory with 5w20 IIRC (I think that's what I throw in mine). Read somewhere that the heavier weights can't be that good for the engine since its a different viscosity

    Age, likely. The older Tacomas have a bit more robust set of bearings too. Which might mean slightly larger clearances. Might .

    You Volcom, should have an oil temp gauge. Running a 20 weight with an S/C, in hot climates is a sure fire way to over heat the oil. Especially if you don't have an oil cooler. A 20 weight is decent for cruising around, but definitely not for beating on. Doesn't have the resiliency to withstand heat as well as a 30 weight. It will get to 300ºF much easier. My recommendation is at a 30 weight. At least in the summer. With some added ZDDP.

    I believe my Ultragauge has Oil temp on it, I'll throw that on my main screen to watch that closer.

    Switched to heavier oil due to high miles (190k) and it was reccomended. Truck runs MUCH better.

    Not sure what caused the knock to go away...the plugs or the oil but I'm glad it's gone lol

    Next oil change will likely switch back to normal oil...maybe 10w-30 or something

    You'd be good with a 5w-40 Anthony. Good protection and broader range of temperature flow characteristics.

    Yeah, 15-40 sounds awfully heavy, even for SoCal weather. You said you're now running synthetic 5w-30, yes? If your engine is not knocking or burning oil, stay with that weight; it's what Toyota recommends for the Tacoma. Gas mileage will definitely go south with thicker oil.

    BTW, I'm a little east of you, in Lakeside. If you need help with something, don't be afraid to ask.

    I switched from 5w-30 to 15w40. Yeah probably overkill. I am going to run it for 5k and go back to a normal oil and hopefully with no knock lol
