Can you elaborate on the transmission mount that I need? The one you took a picture of looks exactly the same as the one on my existing 2WD A340E transmission. What's the difference?

The little arms that mount to the transmission are longer on the 4WD one

    2WD:

Just keep in mind the mounts for automatic and manual transmissions are different, so make sure you get the right mount for the tranny you have

Ahh. That makes sense now. Is it better to buy this new or used?

I just bought one from autozone, they aren't that expensive but if you can get one used and it's in good shape then go for it

Are there any bolts that I need to get that aren't able to re-used?

I decided to take apart a trans from a 99 to get the output shaft. I plan on taking the trans out of my truck today and swapping it. I also plan on getting my driveshaft cut and balanced instead of getting a replacement, it'll be cheaper.

Not sure, I didn't get my old one back from the guy who installed it. I think it comes with the bolts you need? :notsure:

Awesome! You'll be 4WD in no time. How was it taking the trans apart?

It was fairly simple it took me about an hour and a 1/2. I just hope the assembly goes by smoothly. I found some manual hubs for $200 locally.

Hahaha very true. If anything goes wrong I'll just buy the trans on eBay. I'm just trying to save 700-1000$

Can you tell me what vehicle you sourced your "J-Shift transfer case" from? I'm looking to do the 4x4 myself and want to make sure I know where to look on which vehicle.

I got my transfer case off eBay and it came off a 3rd gen 4runner. Here's a link so an eBay listing of the correct transfer case you need:
    http://m.ebay.com/itm/201933150488?_mwBanner=1

It can be off of a first generation tacoma or 3rd generation 4Runner, just make sure there is no actuator on the transfer case, all j shifts (with the exception of certain year 4Runners, explained in my write up) do not have an actuator on it.

There she is with the 4x4 output shaft. Too much work but well worth saving the money

Not to bad, as long as you remember where everything goes and how it went.

Nice job. With the 03-04 transmissions, swapping the output shaft is the way to go.

What changed from 01-02 to 03-04 with the transmissions?

    95.5 - 02 utilizes a throttle shift down cable.
    03 - 04 utilizes a hybrid "throttle by wire"

There is no direct cable. Half of the system is computer driven.

I was under the impression that the a340f was the trans for the 4 cyl.
I had a a complete a340f and t case for my 2.7 swap but sold it a while back.
