    For example, when Nick and I were out in AB, I was leading Nick, Steve (Svtstoy), and Dirk (SDsurfer) on a trail and my Baofeng battery died because it wasn't at full charge. That was "MY BAD", of course, BUT, I had my GMRS/FRS radio with me as well that day. Those operate on the 400MHz freq band. I told the rest of the group, I had to do it for them (LOL), to go to a particular frequency and I could communicate to them through the GMRS/FRS radio. WORKED GREAT!!! So, comms were not necessarily down, but somewhat "diverted". THIS is WHY I keep emphasizing to have different comms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CB, HAM, GMRS/FRS, Race radios (I don't have experience with them, but they typically operate in the 2m range that I know of), etc. The battery dying on me, again, my bad, but the point is is that you just NEVER know when something is going to happen... regardless!!!

    Recently, I've been reading another thread and they're emphasizing SPOT and InReach, which are apparently REALLY GOOD!!! But, they're also paid services, that I understand, and I and many others don't have money to throw at things like that. So, in order to find an alternate, which I will admit is hard to beat relative to those two, I will try to come up with a solution of something that I already have. Has NOTHING to do with being cheap, but more of me knowing how to monitor the money flow out of the bank account!!!

    Finally, if you do get a single band 2m radio, then get the 2m antenna that Ed suggested up top in his post!!! It's tunable as well, which is really good for fine tuning the antenna to the freq band!!! :thumbsup:

    A mobile or handheld? A mobile is one that you install in a vehicle. A handheld is one that you carry in your hand. Just to let you know.

    VERY SWEET!!! Pretty cool of Oscar @BLKTRUCK to do shi* like that!!! :thumbsup::fistbump::drunk:

    I'm ALWAYS telling my sister how cool and AWESOME you guys are... with the exception of the politically incorrect comments and other things, LOL!!! :rofl: She actually laughs about it and does this :facepalm: as well!!! LOL!!! I showed her that video of Ed's @MotoEd with the guy in the bathroom and having the "Hershey Squirts" just spraying the bathroom wall and she, seriously, almost vomited and said, "who do you hang out with..." and I was like, "my buddies... I don't know... they seem chill to me...???" :notsure::burp: LOL!!! :laughing::laugh::rofl:

    Btw, you do NOT want to "cut" your antenna on your handheld!!! It should still receive, but your transmit will go to SHI*!!!

    I just wanted to add also that she knows that you guys would look out for me if I ever needed help on a trail or whatever?! :thumbsup::fistbump: She also didn't want me to go on my solo night run up Santiago Peak without, at least, one of you guys, but I told her that none of you were able to go. Then she wanted me to give her Nick's @Nicklovin phone number just in case since no one was able to go with me!!! She refers him as "the crazy one", LOL!!! :laughing::laugh::rofl: That's where Nick got his name for his avatar.

    Anyways, she knows she can trust you guys!!! :thumbsup::fistbump::drunk:

    :laughing::laugh::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

    I plan on going again around Sept beginning of Oct. Not too long after San G and or just before?

    I never get tired of that trail as I always see something different about it? :notsure:

    That night I did the solo, a white 2nd Gen was going up the same time I was, but he blasted through it!!! :eek: I was doing my best to keep up with him, but his truck was soooo much built-up more than mine and he was just going on that road like it was flat pavement while I was bouncing all over the place!!! :goingcrazy: LOL!!! :rofl::rofl::rofl: At that point, that's when I decided to just stop and take some pictures on the way up, LOL!!! By the time I got to the peak, he was on his way back down and I tried saying hi, but his windows were too darkly tinted?! :notsure: I saw him stop for a little bit and then just continued back down. He had a very nice looking rig and looked very, very similar to Sandz's setup. But, I knew it was Sandz.

    I did some searching on a suitable dual band antenna. I'm not really a fan of the tiny metal whip antennas designed for dual band. Reminds me too much of an RC car or something. I really like my firestick antenna and it doubles as a whip with a flag mounted on it. But during my search for a similar "dual band fiberglass whip antenna, I came across some guys using the 1/4wave 2m antennas for their dual band setup. Too bad that the 1/4wave antenna is only 15" long. That only makes it flush with the top of my shell. Ever hear or looked into using a 1/4wave antenna for dual band setup??? Just thought that might be a cool option.

    ??? You can't use a 2m antenna for "dual band" unless it is rated as such (i.e. dual band)!!! You SHOULD be able to receive just fine, but on TX, I'd be surprised if you get anything appreciable when transmitting and also not damaging the output of the radio due to "RF reflection"?! A dual band antenna typically has "notch type filters" somehow built into the antenna itself. That is why you will typically see "segments" on a dual, tri, quad band type antenna. The lower part of the "segment" is of a higher freq band, the segment just above it is for a longer freq band, the third segment is for the next longer wave freq band, etc. Then you have either your "radials" and/or "GND plane" to also indicate, some times, of where one stops and one begins regarding one freq to the next on a dual band type antenna system. Yagi antennas, in a sense, are similar to this regard as well!!!

    I have a COMET antenna, I believe is a tri-band and is easily around 3ft or just over! So, since it is a tri-band, you can use it as a 2m antenna as well! But, it is no "fiberglass whip" in that regards. I've been "studying" antenna designs lately on my own with "free software" and WANT to eventually purchase the full version, but anyways, there is a thing called "skin effect" as well as the type of material being used that will cause how well the antenna will do when transmitting. You have to understand that it is ALL about transmitting and very, VERY LITTLE to do with receive for an antenna system. So, meaning, I think when it comes to fiberglass whips, it gets pretty hard to design something within "reasonable costs to the end user"?!
