From what I saw it is doable just watch the signs and choose trails wisely. There are a lot of other people out there. I am sure we can plan another trip with more of us soon also.

Welcome! Bridgeport OHV is the closest to DFW where wheeling is legal. There are many county roads up in Grayson county that are dirt at best but nothing too fun if not muddy. If you don't already have plans for Labor Day weekend, there's a 4 Wheel Parts Customer Appreciation event at Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area in Gilmer (north of Tyler) Friday-Sunday. It's free to sign up and gets you admission to the park and dinner on Saturday. You can camp out there for the weekend. Here's the link to register https://form.jotform.us/70996495304164 I'll be there with a few others for Saturday and maybe camp out 1 night. BMRA is a much bigger park and all the trails are labeled. Bridgeport is kind of a mess and easy to get lost, especially if you're alone and the first time out there. Maybe late September or early October we can plan another Bridgeport Trip, or weather might be cool enough to go camp at Hidden Falls near Austin.

As far as mods, as @SuperBad said skid plates and sliders should be toward the top of your list if you plan to do any hardcore wheeling. 2.5-3" lift and good tires go a long way so those should be a couple of the first things you do. However a stock TRDOR truck is definitely very capable on its own.

What about the Tacoma TRD plates? Are those good enough? I just like the looks of those a lot...

    Any recommendation for good sliders?

Welcome from Fort Worth. If you are just looking for a place to get off pavement there are some dirt roads at the Caddo-LBJ National Grasslands near the TADRA Trail Head. There are plenty of gravel roads but they are nothing you would need 4wd for and if you leave the defined road a park ranger will crawl so far up your ass you'll have to feed him.
This picture is from out there. I like because there are a few good picture spots, it's lightly traveled so I can go fast on bad roads to test my shocks and there are some good hiking trails I can take the dog with me on. This is a place you can go alone with no risk.

As for places with real off-roading:

Northwest OHV Park in Bridgeport, TX is northwest of Fort Worth. Small public park, cheap to get in, good mix of trails, easy to get to. Perfect for a day trip. Bring a friend because you can get stuck or make poor choices and need an adult.

Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area in Gilmer, TX is east just north of Tyler. Large public park, reasonable fees, trails from your Civic could do it to a buggy will have problems, a bit of a drive from Dallas. Great for a weekend of camping and wheeling. Best with someone who has been there before to show you where your truck can go with your acceptable level of risk, mine is likely higher than yours.

You can meet many of us at the meetup next month!

Best price you can find for what you like. I chose to go bolt on but if I did it again would probably do weld on and save the extra money. Keep shipping cost in mind as bulky metal is expensive to ship and adds to the cost.

I'm always down to go out and explore this, new to me, area. So, if anyone wants to go out, outside of the meets, hit me up, I'll probably be down for it...

I'll definitely be at the next meet!

Theres also a 4wp customer appreciate event in september at BMRA in september. Reg is free for the moment, its about 3 hours away so sign up now if youre interested.

We should have at least one more local meet up before then as well, but thatll be just beer and BS.

Id recommend starting with armor first as well - sliders then skids.

The plates under your truck that come stock with the Off-Road are splash plates, they are just there to keep mud and small rocks away from the engine, they crumple the first time you think about driving over a big rock.

The TRD Pro aluminum skid plate is 1/4" aluminum is good for most people, light and easy to bolt on to your truck. Unless you have plans to do rock crawling this should be enough for a weekend warrior.

For sliders there are a few local vendors making them which can save you a lot on shipping. I'm partial to Tandem Automotive in SW Fort Worth, they are a Toyota only off-road shop. They currently have my truck doing a bunch of work to it. Several others have had them do work for them @dwaltdtx @Silverspool @Naveronski @MRBOND101 @ThomasMore66

Lone Wolf Off Road is in Justin near the speedway. @kennethalan just had a set of sliders installed by them and seems to be happy.
