Trailer security

I know this isn't 3rd gen specific, but I was hoping people could chime in with their opinions on keeping a trailer semi-safe. I understand basically anything can be stolen if somebody has enough time and wants it bad enough. I just bought a TaxaOutdoors Tigermoth - super excited - and I want to figure out the best way to secure it. First, I was going to take off the spare and leave it in my truck bed under my OEM tonneau cover. Options that I have figure out so far:

I have wrapped a chain around the axle and thru the wheel. I also have insurance for $30 a year so if they really want it they can have it. It's a Maxim 5x8.

I got the factory wheel locks and spare tire lock which are working fine so far. For my trailer I use a ball receiver lock, that I bought at the dealer, originally got one at Harbor freight and it was too short. I also have a tongue coupler lock I bought at Walmart. The trailer lock are really just good for when I have my boat trailer parked and I'm on the lake. It's just a deterrent, I know. If someone wants to steal your stuff you can't stop it.

Most thieves look for the easy stuff to steal, so if you have a set of wheel locks most won't bother to try and steal your wheels. They will simply move to the next easiest target. Only career criminals or someone looking for something specific will attempt to get around those added layers of protection. But as you already mentioned if someone wants it bad enough, they will take it. I would just get some locks like you have already mentioned and more than likely that will be enough. Just make sure you have some insurance on it. That's your biggest protection

Will do. There are more videos out there than you think. But it is a leap of faith. I am counting on NASA guys designed something that will hold up. It makes way more sense that a years drop, which is what my wife and I wanted before discovering this. It is small, easily portable even with wife's Forrester XT. It is basic, it either works or it doesn't. My opinion is of you want it get it.

Also, the MSRP on mine was about 21 since came with Tepui 3 person tent, an awning, a watersport, a air conditioner and a few other options. Got it for 15300. There are other dealers across the country selling it without those add ons for more. There was a place selling for nearly 20k in Washington.

I use the coupler lock when parked on all my trailers. I also park in front of them when home. On the road I don't bother with tongue pin locks but I do use the small lock on the coupler mechanical locking part. I use this so I know I actually locked the trailer to the ball. I then use a braided cable around my A frame and to the truck. I have debated pouring a cement post underground with a steel ring in it to lock the cable to when parked at home.



Serious thieves are going to get your stuff. You have to make it look like work so they move on to something easier and deter the lazy thieves. As tools get better old technology becomes obsolete. Cordless grinders can defeat a lot of stuff. Crowbars as well. Lighting is one of the best deterrents. No one likes being seen while stealing and cameras add to this as well. I know a guy who took an old ball and cut off the stem and locked it in the coupler so you couldn't just put a smaller ball or hook in there. I know around here there were the tow truck bandits. Literally chained the A frame to their tow crane and pulled dozens of trailers away that way. Took a few years to get caught but all the stolen stuff was gone. So no one system defeats every thief but multiple systems together increases your chance of them not even bothering. Sucks when you still have your stuff but it is fubared due to their persistence.

 

My Tacoma is not my toe vehicle, but on my toe vehicle I have the trailer wired into the car alarm. Unplug the trailer wiring and the alarm goes off. I also have an accessory loop so when I use my open trailer with bikes, I run a wire through all the bikes, so the alarm will go off if wire is unplupugged / broken. This is obviously for traveling.

1st off, you need to update your location. It will make it much easier for thieves, err, I mean members to offer good suggestions on how to secure your rig.
