Same with my job. Public hearings on projects are very reminiscent of preschool arguments over who gets to play with a toy or who did what to get in trouble or something

Don't forget keeping shitbags that don't want to do work employed because the Unions need members.

Isn't that the truth. I work for the state and I see that sh!t often. Irritates me to no end. The union fights to keep people employed that should otherwise be let go. Plenty of hard-working people out in the world ready to replace them.

Right to work! right to work! right to work!

I work for SFPUC and my wife is a public school teacher; I have no idea why we're unionized, totally goofy.

The unions are seriously so stupid. They have a well paying trade and the union takes care of them. But they dont even help their own cause to send people out to do ANY type of recruiting out of colleges or high schools. Seems like a huge missed opportunity.

I wouldn't go that far, but I get what you're saying. Maybe it depends on the field/industry. I think unions still have their place as far as fighting for workers' rights, fair wages, etc. It's when their primary function becomes collecting money to fund their political activities where I have a problem.

I agree with the original intent of the unions, It was so greedy business owners treated the workers fairly. Then the unions themselves became greedy business men and it all turned to shit.

100% agreed, this union is run by leather jacket wearing gel helmet goons. But its made us who we are and put us on the map, without them there is no way we're as successful as we have been.

But fuck em, for the record.

Union came after us for $2.2 mil last month. Arbitrator found the spreadsheet error and it was actually $1.1 mil...

HOA's and private residences are exempt from the union landscape agreement. San Francisco was coming after us on a HOA project and said SF wasn't part of that agreement, even though the agreement clearly lists "all 46 Northern California counties". They said we needed to pay our employees "Group 3" rates.

Here's the fucked up part. Our employees are union. They get paid tech rates, which are a bit lower than group rates, and recognized in every other county. For public works and commercial construction jobs, we pay the higher group rates in SF, Lake, and Marin counties per the landscape agreement. We also bid it that way, like everyone else, and it's a level playing field.

So we're paying union wages, on a non-union job, and competed against 2 non-union contractors to get this project. And the union still came after us.

The grievance was dropped by the pro-union arbitrator because everyone knew it was bullshit.

I'm glad my employees are union. A few just had some serious health issues with their newborns and needed the medical coverage. So we pay their benefits whether or not the job is union. It also helps us recruit and maintain our employees in this competitive market.

    The union bosses suck though.
