I've known about the frame rust issues and recalls for years, but one thing I've never been able to figure out is the basis for the "insufficient rustproofing" claim. What is "insufficient rustproofing"? How do you quantify it? Is there an industry standard? Are they comparing Tacomas against other brands and models of trucks? Did Dana fail to meet Toyota's specifications for rustproofing or did Toyota make the error in their specifications or just cheap out? What are baseline metrics for the longevity of truck frames?

I ask the above question because I work in the IT world where we deal with Service Level Agreements and Performance Penalties all the time. Some things are hard to quantify and others are not.

the moving mechanics of a vehicle should never outlast the structure the vehicle was built on in my opinion.

That being said, your vehicle should be valued or appraised at time of frame failure (given the frame was in good solid condition for appraisal reasons) and determined if the truck is a write off or not. if truck is considered a write off, the owner should have a choice in weather to receive a cheque in the amount of the damages or to have their vehicle repaired at no cost to them.

I really can't say that it is a 'rustproofing' issue. After the comments and opinions throughout this post I would say it's more like a manufacturer defect.
The frames themselves in there design warrant entrapment of corrosives. Add with that the subpar material/process of manufacture and I think we have a cause to the issue. Its logical but still just my personal opinion and has no backing...As of yet.

I found my invoice from when I had my rear leafs swapped out, trans flush, oil change and rotate back on 6-09-16. Notice on this Multipoint inspection that every item is green boxed, minus washer fluid.
I don't think someone was looking when they were doing their job. Either that or my rust issue must of just started in the past year..hmm...IMG_20170721_160725800_HDR.jpg

dude I feel sorry for you. I cant believe they replace the frames on these trucks. I ant believe Toyota has replaced my frame all ready and not yours. These are all perfectly good reasons why people should not buy the new gen or any other Tacoma

I think if I was up North I may be able to have better luck. They're just not used to this sort of thing.

Back when I bought my 09 I crawled underneath to examine the construction of the undercarriage. Couldn't believe how many internal reinforcements and partial welds there were on the frame. Truely a obvious design flaw. Knew then I had to take a proactive approach to preventing the frame from corroding.
Since then every fall I spray oil on the frame. Yes I drive the truck all year...except in snow storms...and so far it seems to be working well. Have absolutely no rust to speak of. Even when doing maintenance and repairs all bolts and fasteners come off easily. Cant imagine how bad it would be now had I not followed this routine from the getko.

Much the same regimen that I used on my '04, however, eventually, my frame rusted through from the inside out in the boxed section. The oil really helps, but it sure makes it messy to work under there!!

First year or two just WD-40. Now a mix of WD and 15W-40 oil. About 75-25% mix WD to oil. Messy when working on or near frame. Can always powerwash when needed to work on certain areas or parts. Comes off easily with pressure and or soap.

Thx, just curious if you mix this in a can and brush on ? .. or they sell a spray-on solution ? The great thing about trucks is, they're high enough off the ground to make coating easy. Did you keep truck outside first few days after applying ? .... imagine the oil might tend to drip for awhile.

Use commercial spray bottle from Home Depot. Then drive down a dirt road. Does drip for a while if applied heavy. I would first suggest WD in aerosol with the heavy straw to get into all the crevices as its lighter and creeps better than heavier oil. Spend time in and around the boxed portion by the cats. Get as much as you can in that area.

After first application or after first season follow up with gallon can of WD and oil mixed in spray bottle. Avoid direct application to rubber parts and exhaust. I even sprayed the transmission, transfer case, front and rear diffs, springs, control arms, skids, etc.

After a few years it some what builds up, and less additional application is needed. The rear end definately has a much heavier buildup as its more exposed to dust from dirt roads. I even sprayed all the sheetmetal underneath and inner rocker panels, quarters and lowers front fenders. Amazed at how well its holding up.
