Hey guys I've been lurking the montana thread for a bit since I moved here back in april. I went on my first real offroading trip up sweat gulch near nelson and had a blast. Unfortunately i had to turn around due to a downed tree in the road. I now get why people bring axes and shovels and the like with them on their trips. I plan on loading up some gear and taking out that tree because there was an amazing view and i want to go up there and camp.

I'm running a stock third gen and I'm wondering if you all have any suggestions on other places to go? I'm living up in helena so if anyone is local to my area and wouldn't mind a noob wheeler tagging along sometime too that would be awesome

Hey man hit me up whenever you want to go out. I'm always down to find new trails. I 've only been here a month so I'm still learning the area.

Look up the continental offroad group @MTgirl should know the right name. They are mostly based out of helena and are a solid group of guys and gals.

Nice, took a quick look at your posts and it looks like you are AF. I have buddies down at malmstrom. I separated from active back in april and that is why I'm up here for the summer. I was a 2W0, you a 2W2 by chance?

Ahhhhh, damn cops:ballchain:. Yeah i can only imagine, i was stationed out in aviano for a couple years. They had the same kind of stuff going on over there. Caught a lot of cops napping out in the WSA :spy::spy:. Not that i didn't do the same or anything.....

But yeah for sure if you wanna do some wheeling im hiking into the scapegoat for a couple days this weekend. BUT next weekend I think I'm doing a camping trip up to lake leslie. Not sure what the road (or lack of road) looks like but i heard it's a beautiful place. Some of the locals might be able to chime in on this one

not any more. Rich isn't with the group nowadays. Whole different vibe with the group now too compared to what it was. Wouldn't send anyone out with them now - breaking shit, going off trail, taking stock rigs with modified rigs and not teaching anyone anything.,.,

they have their own group but I won't send you there - if I won't go with them then I won't send anyone else out either

That makes a lot of sense, I can definitely appreciate the honesty. Are you local to helena? Know any good trails nearby that a stock TRDOR can survive? The sweat gulch trail was sketchy to be honest, a lot of shale on some steep inclines. Plus i did not air down my tires because i dont have an onboard compressor. That's kind of why i want to find some people with some built up rigs. I'm currently in between careers so i can't afford to upgrade a whole lot at the moment but as soon as fall hits i have big plans.

Yeah @MTgirl and I went wheeling with them this winter. I had words for/with one guy for dangerous stupid shit (dude wad tearing up a hillside with his rock crawler while my truck was parked circle above him).

Another guy I just bit my tongue. Dude had a stock 1/2 90's Chevy and was trying to skinny pedal through everything like a bat out of hell. Thankfully we knew a couple people in the group and just stuck with them.

    Not the best day wheeling.

like i said, i'm a noob to the serious off roading scene. so jeeps or not idk, and what i did by sweat gulch might not be considered serious to you guys. but i'm looking to learn if anyone is willing to let me tag along. i do love camping and i'm not afraid to get dirty. I did all my own maintenance on my old taco (full suspension + front relentless bumper) that was an '08 though

Cool. Weesa is a great guide if you need places to venture too! LoL We've got a couple 3 day camping trip planned this summer yet. But my truck isn't stock.

Best way to learn is to go and find your trucks weaknesses.

well i figured out two this past weekend. i wish i would have brought an ax, and i need a compressor because i was slipping and sliding a lot on the shale. honestly i'm going to put that gopro mount that came with my truck to use this time and record everything. because it was super fun and i could see for miles and miles around. I ended up literally driving on the ridge of the mountain, it was beautiful. Steep declines on each side, when i found that tree i had to back down an incline about 100 feet. Not fun, even with a backup camera

There's a bunch of FS roads up the Boulder River Rd at the Bernice exit south of Basin. Pick the right combo and you'll end up in Deer Lodge. Stick to the north side of the main road. Most of the trails interconnect and act as service roads for the power line there.
And just north of Basin is Galena Gulch by the Merry Widow Health Mine. Those trails pop out near Boulder Hot Springs.
And outside of Townsend is the Old Woman's Grave Road (MT NG training grounds) bunch of trails back there too. I've driven most of the trails in those three areas without an issue. Lots of camping too

Well I was gonna say fb but...

I didn't realize that. I knew they had grown in size a bit, figured they would snag a few people like that but didn't realize it got that bad. Dang that sucks. Was an awesome little group, even if they did drive jeeps lol.

I am sure if Rich ever popped back in here he would be happy to have someone join the few that still sneak out and show you the ropes. Great guy, honestly can't say enough good about him.

Lol I try to not hold that against him.

Rich is an awesome guy. Don't tell him I admitted that though. Might go to his head 'n all.

He does peek into TW now and then. Don't think he posts much though. His tight knit group of friends go wheeling together all the time. Them - I would go wheeling with any day. They'd give you the shirt off their back if you were freezing to death. And they don't leave anyone behind. And - they do not do stupid shit that tears up the land, leads to the FS closing roads, etc.

And they always, always bring food, firewood, and have a yummy picnic when they go wheeling. LOL So if anyone ever gets to go with them bring something to eat.

    Amen to that.

Hell last time I wheeled wit them they may or may not have had to tow Weesa and myself out due to a burnt out clutch.

    Not my proudest moment lol.
