Honestly never happened to me. I drive my 4 banger like it's a race truck.

I would think a good through check of the refrigerant level is cheap insurance. You don't want to freeze up the the evaporator too many times.

From what I can tell from what I've read about online and in various publications, it is quite easy to import a vehicle into Canada from another country (even coveted JDM and European spec vehicles!).

As for U.S. and Canadian vehicles, it seems like the only real difference is that the MPH and Km/h readouts are swapped. If I relocated to Canada for whatever reason, I know my 2010 Tacoma would pass emissions and safety testing in all provinces. I even learned through internet research that most if not all Canadian provinces will exchange an American driver's license (including Pennsylvania) for one of their provincial driver's licenses!

My question is this: If a Canadian citizen moved to the U.S. for whatever reason (whether they are a a diplomat or they relocated for a regular job or to be with their husband or wife), do you Tacoma owners North of the border think a Canadian-spec Tacoma (or any Canadian-spec vehicle that is also sold Stateside) would be able to pass emissions and safety testing in America?

It should pass, they are built at the same place as US models. Mine is built in Texas for example.

I have a friend who makes a good living selling used Canadian cars & trucks at auction in the US. He does more business in trucks. With the current f/x rate of the CAD to US $, he buys used in Canada with CAD $, and sells at auction in US $. There is a huge market for used vehicles (trucks especially) in US. All exported vehicles must meet US regulations (MPH, lighting, safety, emissions etc.). Emissions are usually not an issue, no matter the make.

Canadian vehicles actually have more little safety features than American vehicles. It's not just a gauge cluster switch. Little things like DTRL set to always on (user cannot turn them off) can cost a few hundred to have modified correctly if you pay a shop. If you're bringing a vehicle from Canada to the USA though it's usually just an inspection and a cluster to get things done.

All and all though, yes, it's easy to switch over vehicles between Canada and the USA. There is a minimum ownership before you can do it though. In other words, you do need to USUALLY own a new truck in the country for a bit before shipping it across the border. For Canadians bringing back American vehicles I think it was a couple of months and a few thousand K IIRC. I don't think it's as strict for importing a vehicle into the USA. Obviously none of this is a problem if the vehicle is already used.

It's also really tough to get a RHD JDM or European car into Canada if it's less than 15 years old (I think it's 15 now, could be longer, they were going to make it longer). I don't know where you read that it was easy but it's a lie. Anything less than 15 years old and RHD won't pass a safety inspection in Canada.

It would pass. But not sure US law would let it in?
From what I understand they need to be a certain age to come in? Or is that only for over seas?

There's a few other variations for US vs Canada depending on state and possibly province. I know most though have it mandatory day time running where only certain States have it.

It's easy because in the US I believe it's 25 years to import from over seas.

But yes here in Canada it's 15 years to import.

I would still suggest a recharge, all vehicles slowly leak r134a and a 2009 will still operate just fine, but a full charge will operate more efficiently across the entire evaporator.

AC clutch cut off is normal on nearly all vehicles.

Best was probably our '08 Audi A4.

Worst was either my 2000 A6 because it didn't work. Or my 2016 Jetta, which took 15 minutes to work and when it did, it was still garbage.

Worse was my '83 yota pickup that didn't have a/c.

Best by far has been both Tacoma's. 2000 went 12 years with no service's and would run you out of the truck it was so cold. Same with the 2011, great a/c in it too. Easily will run you out of there on high.

Only think they should require would be a DRL system added on, which is as easy as a relay to either the headlights or the park lights just so they turn on with the ignition. Any reputable shop should have it done for no more then 1.5hr shop rate on a tacoma. I had to do it on an Aston Martin Vantage that one we charged 2.5hr due to the type of car and that you have to take off a fair amount of stuff and the owner didnt want to see any wiring. but for the tacoma it will be fairly simple, if a shop says you need a specific DRL kit just doesnt know how a relay works haha. Also you dont have to change the cluster as it will show the speed in Km/h which is all they would look for.

Yes you don't have to change the cluster but a lot of people do just to avoid resale confusion.
