I noticed my A/C wasn't cooling as I thought it should. I bought a can of refrigerant and added it to the system. Once the can had been added, it seemed to cool better so prior to putting the cap back onto the pressure line, I did the ol put a little spit on the port to make sure no leaks. Well, I have very small bubbles! My question is , Can the little "bicycle tube" looking valve in the port be replaced OR am I in store for a visit to the Toyota Dealer for an A/C service?

Thanks to anyone who an offer a solution.

Well it depends how large a leak it is. Sometimes if the leak is miniscule enough all you have to do is reapply the service port cover and tighten it good since it has a seal integrated into it and it'll be fine. Otherwise if the leak bubbles are larger then it would be wise to replace it. There are different types of Schraeder valves based on the pressure it will be sealing. If you want to replace it, go ahead but do understand that you will need an AC service done CORRECTLY to properly use your system and ensure long service life and functionality afterwards.

Next time, do not use those cans. Those things should be outlawed for sale as they do more harm than good.

There is a tool you can by for about $16.00 that will allow you to change out the schrader without loosing your charge. 12TRD is correct in saying don't use those cans, if you change it out yourself you should put a set of gauges on the system and make sure your pressures are ok.

You can get gauges at harbor freight cheap if you don't have them.

Are you sure the little bubbles aren't from the spit itself. I know when I spit, there are little bubbles.

Do you have a link to one of these tools?

I have never seen a way to replace a schrader valve without dumping the charge.

You can usually get them cheaper at a supply house. They work well.

After going on line to NAPA, Their Schrader valves all said "Not Vehicle specific" , does that sound correct? Plus they ran price wise the entire spectrum, from around $5.00 to $40.00.

Different vehicles have different Schaefer valves. Best to evac the system and take the shrader valve out if you have no idea which one replaces it. A low side shrader for a Tacoma is not a universal part. And a few bubbles after you take the can tap off is normal. And btw using those cans is a sin.

Serious. I'm mostly retired and I did not know that there are different valve cores for vehicles.

Thanks for all of the answers and responses to My A/C question. Almost everyone who responded, did so with the added note that using the small cans of the 134 refrigerant is a major sin. What do you use if not the little cans?

What they mean is if you do not know what you are doing and do not have a complete proper gauge set you can cause more harm than good. Take it to a reputable AC shop.
