You can run your VIN yourself and know ahead of time if it's "recall" or "Warranty".

    Update #3:

While at the dealership to pickup my truck during my lunch break:

    1) When asked ETA on parts: The service guy called the parts department, they told us that parts should be here in few days because it was ordered just before some cut-off time...

    2) I asked is it just gasket? No studs replacement? He said no looks like just the gasket. I will add that he didn't seem 100% when answering my questions but was friendly, maybe new guy at the job.

Let's see how it goes from here...

I think for those with the leak but not on recall list, i think maybe better/safer to just mention that your rear differential is leaking and they should fix under warranty. Mayne just not mentioning the recall would make it easier???

I asked the service writer was he sure it wasn't leaking and he replied that was what is on the paperwork. According to him, no leak but they re-torqued the bolts. Cant wait to get down there and look at it.

Don't know if they're allowed or not...only that over here Enterprise is empty. It's a Corolla or nothing. They're also running out of room to keep the trucks they've held. It'd be funny if I wasn't included in the shenanigans.

I suppose if someone said "I'll wait until the parts come in" the service folks are not guilting them into leaving the truck anymore.

Service managers are just that....Managers. Many are not mechanics and have no clue about other than doing their job. Some are great and others well the opposite of great. Just depends on who owns the dealership and the overall dealer culture. As others have said before, some dealers don't care and some do. Toyota is not going to pull the plug on any dealer because they would be cutting their distribution network. Also Dealers are independent of Toyota and Toyota likes it that way to separate any liability on them.

As for the Recall we have seen all kinds of inconsistencies.

    Trucks fixed quickly
Trucks held hostage while dealer has no clue
Dealer says sign away your rights if you take truck
Parts at one dealer available in days
Parts at other dealers months away
Dealer lets you take truck while parts on order
Dealer cleans rear pumpkin and denies any leak

On another note, in that Truck Article about Tacoma's being held hostage the Toyota Spokesperson mentions that Toyota introduced a re-tightening procedure in March at the factory....WTF.

Basically if indeed that is all it is, a lot more trucks will be pissing rear diff fluid. The 2nd Gens didn't have this issue

This whole thing is becoming a like a tidal wave, they'd better get their asses in gear before they end up with riots.

Ok, so here is my update..got a call today, parts for Crankshaft Position sensor are in, AND they have approval from corp to inspect, refill rear diff fluid, re-torque, order parts (if needed) send me on my way WITH my truck, come back when parts are in and send me on my way. No more holding of trucks. Brought it up tonight for the service tomorrow, in addition to 10K service, drove home in a purple corolla...:bananadance:. I have a quarter sized weep in the rear diff. (TRD Sport and I'm on recall list)

Confirmed, multiple times that they will not be holding my vehicle as I leave for vacation soon and the truck is semi packed....I'm going to get the truck tomorrow evening if/when work finally lets me out...Stand by...im ready for a fight if needed :duel:

I actually forgot my garage door opener but it worked out because it gave me an excuse to go check up on truck, see where it was parked, and to see how many other Tacos were on the lot.

It has been 3 weeks already and im thinking now of asking to go get my spare sunglasses.

Then a week later perhaps Ill get that wedding invitation that is in my center console......I have a co-workers husband that has been playing this game as well.

So I finally received the call to go pick up my truck. I was expecting that when I got there I would be picking up a nice clean truck. instead they left the bird poop kind of burned into the clear coat and gave me back a dirty truck I was a little bit bothered by it but I figured hey I'm not going to push it I'll just clean the truck inside and out to my liking. I also took a look at the replacement gasket as well as the nuts I noticed they did not clean off the staining so before I started to wash the truck I hit it off with some brake cleaner so I can just keep an eye on it make sure it's not leaking anymore. I'm sure my truck is enjoying being back in my hands and also being clean to my OCD standards. Best of luck to all of you guys. Stay persistent on your dealer and also on the CEOs assistance.

Is there a reason why you didn't tell them to take it back and clean the truck and the stain?

I did think about it about telling them something but I was just humble just to get my truck back.

Went into the dealer today, I am still number one to be fixed. Mine is the gaskets, seals and nuts, Toyota sent them the nuts and seals, but only the back gasket, so they can't really do any thing until the front gasket arrives. I asked for the ETA, they have no idea, Toyota is not talking to their dealers! I told them again that the rear end was making noise, he said they won't know until they tear it down, if it is damaged, more waiting! I asked him if the gasket was just a band-aid, he said yes. We need to put the blame where it belongs, Toyota Motor Corporation!
