I was thinking of getting the S&B ($300) originally but i just found a 2 month old one K&N off Craig list and the guy will go down to $130 for it.
So now I'm really considering picking that up instead just because of how much cheaper it is. My only concern is that I have heard the K&N aren't a true CAI because the heat shield they use, ends up feeding warm air not cold air to the engine. Versus the S&B which has an actual box on it so its getting cooler air. And if this is true how big of a deal is it?
The other concern I have is that I like to off road a fair bit and there is a ton of dust where i wheel, and because it is not in a actual box it will end up sucking way more crub and hurt the engine.

Thank you! and yes i want it to be louder.

As long as your expectations are limited to making it louder than go for it. Just don't expect any performance gains cause it won't provide any

Great price but not the best option. I went with aFe Power CAI with their dry filter to avoid any chance of mucking up the air sensor. Lots of people here will say it's a waste of money but I think it's worth every penny spent. Even if the haters are right and there are no performance gains (which I don't agree with) it still makes the truck sound awesome.

Personal experience with the K&N drop in element was poor. The filter let by alot of dust. K&N blamed me for not installing it correctly. If I recall correctly the thing can only go in one way. Also no dust trails from the seals leaking by which leads me to believe they don't really care. Been back to the stock filter on my 05 and no dust in site after I cleaned the piping.

Yeah sure but this question you posted could of just been a continuance of your other noise maker post. Good Luck

YOU ALREADY HAVE A COLD AIR INTAKE..... STOCK.

    Sounds kinda cool though...

The K&N element was designed for flow not filtration. If you run an oil a analysis it will likely yield high silicon. Not to be confused with silicone although in testing the silicone if fresh can give a false signature of contamination. Typically silicon in the oil is dirt contamination.

Very correct. Aftermarket filtration systems typically mixed flow meaning they draw both warm air from the engine bay and cool air that flows from the fender well.

Before pulling the trigger on a CAI kit of your choice contact the tech dept of those companies and see what the micron rating and flow rating is compared to stock. You will be surprised that they will claim flow is higher as is filtration. This is possible but not likely due to the engine being naturally aspirated. The engine will only draw in what it needs unlike forced induction. On the filtration side of things the high flowing washable elements typically filter less than OEM.

Bro it's the same topic man.
Now to help you: You will absolutely get zero performance or efficiency gains over stock. Zero. You will get noise. If that's the thing you want then go for it. BTW your stock intake is CAI already. Look at where it draws it's air from... outside.

FYI. Turbulence creates noise. Laminar flow does not unless a natural resonant frequency of a component is excited.

In a nutshell the factory air induction system provides smooth flow via a few baffles which redirect air. Those parts create a smooth path of air flow.

Agreed. In the past dyno testing by 3rd parties yielded an overall loss in performance and fuel economy.

Remember more air in requires more fuel to meet the required air fuel ratio.

Also the factory fuel tables may not be able to properly compensate the added air(which we know doesn't happen on an NA engine) which can cause a rich condition.

OP please understand we are not bashing your idea we are simply telling you factual information for your own benefit as well as your pocket book. If you truly want additional performance look into forced induction or a tune that will maximise your performance potential. Note any added performance via forced induction will place more stress on the OEM components which were never intended to see.
