I have a nail clipper on my key chain that cuts zip ties nicely. To unscrew a pipe clamp will take more than a few turns of a screwdriver to remove. So perhaps now I can see why both might be "better" in slowing someone down.

Thanks for the good information....keep it coming.

I agree with this one. Either method can be defeated. But it takes some time to do that and both will increase the amount of time it takes. And since I think most of the tailgate type thefts are of the smash and grab variety and the thief is probably not planning on spending time analyzing the challenge and will simply move on to another target.

It is a blue plastic coated SS cable that runs through the sheet metal on the gate under the bed and is cable locked .

The tail gate is essentially tied to the frame and the cable needs to be cut for removal -- and cable is difficult to cut.

Just prevents a jerk from a snatch and grab theft.

2 buddies of mine had their tailgates stole on their Tacomas.

I've been lucky. I have the hose clamps and I think it actually prevented a thief once. i returned to my truck at the movies one time and saw my tail gate down.

Thanks DT, that's where I got the idea for the bed extender/d ring, may try a bike lock for the extender, blue cable for the gate. How did you rig/lock the cable underneath(basic set up), unless of course you plan on a market strategy for future income.;)

I have the plumbing strap around the right side pivot point, I used a section of an inner tube so as not to dig into the paint. That cable is a good idea to!

Now that I look at it, probably time to change out the piece of rubber for a fresh one:)

My question is, can't anyone with a screwdriver still steal it? I had my tail lights stolen on my ranger the day after I put them on, and all they needed was a screwdriver, luckly I still had oem lights and they didnt steal my tailgate. I think even if they couldn't get it the first time they could come back with the right tool.

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
Yes and no. If you notice alot of us have them so you have to work to get a screwdriver in there or you have to use a wrench. Remember it is only a deterrent, as any "anti" theft device is. If they want it that bad, they will take it.

Yep. This clamp trick turns the theft into a 2-man operation...1 to hold the gate at 45deg, and the other to use the screwdriver from underneath the truck.
