Hi everyone, I know that manuals are dwindling down in the automotive industry, and that the percentage of manual cars is very low in the US. However, I find that a lot of people here on TW drive manuals like me. Therefore I wanted to do a poll to see what ratio of manual Tacomas we have on TW. A quick search on google shows that about 6.7% of cars sold in 2010 were manuals. So lets see if Tacoma / off-roading enthusiasts have a higher percentage.

Both of my Tacomas were manuals.

As I've stated in the past I'll ride the bus before I'll own an automatic transmission.

Your thread is titled "who drives a manual?" which will instantly tell most automatics "oh, that thread isn't for me." So, your poll will be inaccurate as it will really only draw in manual drivers per your thread title.

Totally agree, outta the 25 or so vehicles I've had, I bet 4 were automatics.....to each their own though.

Manual trans here, I'll always own one. I live in Los Angeles and commute at least 30 miles a day, doesn't bother me a bit (traffic bothers me but I don't see it as any more of an issue with a manual). It's worth it to be able to row my own gears. To each their own, but I drive too much to not enjoy doing it. And having a manual makes it far more enjoyable in every aspect. I prefer 4x4'ing with one as well, but I know that's an often heated debate on it's own...just feels much more rewarding to me.

My Tacomas are the only autos I've ever owned and I wouldn't have it any other way. Now, if I had a 4-banger, sure. But in general - on-road only for me, but I totally get why some folks prefer to play with the shifter off road. I just don't feel the same satisfaction of a smooth downshift the way I do in my car. Probably something to do with the longer, looser throw of a truck tranny. I've driven too many slick transmissions in cars for me to get anything out of a truck in that regard.

I do miss how smooth the manual trans was in my front wheel drive coupe that I had before this truck, I will admit that my Tacoma took some getting used to.

I never learned how to drive a Automatic so I can only drive manuals .

If I got a Automatic I would need to learn how to rebuild them

I don't know how to drive an automatic either. They can be very tricky, I remember trying to drive one once and I stomped that huge, wide brake pedal with my left foot as I was coming to a stop. I too do not know how to rebuild one. I've rebuilt several manual transmissions.

haha, I've actually done that in my mom's BMW several years ago. It has one of those pseudo-manual "shift modes" where you just bump the shift lever up or down to change gears, and without a clutch. I was driving it around town and while going through an intersection I went to shift up a gear and WHAM, car screeches to a halt....realized I stomped on the brake without thinking because I was so used to using a clutch while shifting. Got lucky there was no one right behind me. Last time I ever used it that way.

I have preferred manual transmissions since my first car. Bought a T100 with auto in '94. It was outstandingly reliable, but not my cup of tea. In '04 I went looking for a 2wd crewcab truck with manual transmission--had to buy a Nissan to get it. SWMBO has always had a stick shift until the last one--knee problems make a clutch inconvenient.

I am skeptical--I do not believe that real world MPGs for automatics equal or exceed those for manuals.

Autos these days are really efficient, I'm not surprised that they claim higher mpgs than manuals...especially given the user-dependent nature of manuals and how they're driven. But the smiles per gallon will always be better in a manual trans :D

Wish I could have a manual as my DD. Health may prevent me from driving a manual everyday due to pain so I had to go with an auto. :( No real complaints though I love my truck!

I agree the title would have provided a biased result. Let's see what this brings.

I do not know that I can be comfortable if my off road rig was automatic. Manual is far superior in every way, and way more user friendly.

I have an auto Tacoma and manual Porsche, I prefer auto trucks or daily drivers because Tucson is a giant grid of lights that always seem to turn red as soon as I approach them. The weekend car that goes on twisty mountain roads needs to have 3 pedals.
