3rd gen with a tray?

Seriously thinking about ditching the bed and putting a tray on my truck. Anyone ever seen a 2016+ with a tray (aka flatbed)?

I was considering the same thing, but the prices are outrageous for what you get.

 

Trays are more convenient for actually hauling

But then you might get mistaken for smuggling if you're ever near the border where the "Great Wall of USA" is being built.

Yeah. The price is the biggest drawback. I have a few friends that build keep and truck parts. I may see how much it would cost to build one.

I'm thinking of something that has a slide out ramp (like on a UHaul) that could be recessed when stowed or locked out about 12 inches for hauling motorcycles.

 

I was looking at easier loading for camping junk, plus the coolness factor of having the drop sides

I think there was a guy with a 2nd gen who designed his own from a CAD file, so they're not too hard to build.

 

Camping was the other factor for me too. Plus if I ever get a camper, the tray mounts have a ton more room.

I think i saw that bed, turned out amazing too if i recall.... i need to search for it now that i need one for an 1981 truck.

 

The Ute ltd. company that I mentioned in post #11 carries bed specifically for the older Hilux trucks. I think those ones are around $3k without install.

 

If I had $10,000-$15000 to throw away on a tray I would. Very common and probably preferred overseas.

 

I picked up a ute bed for a great deal in Seattle. Helped install it and sold my original tray to off set the cost. I'm still working on getting the lights figured out. I blew a brake fuse and now throw ABS error codes. But love the product and love the look.

Ute bed cut me a deal because he was just about to order a new container load. 10%off the asking price of $2500. I got $1000 for the old bed and $900 from the insurance company for the dent in my tail gate. I have $90 into the lights but still have to pay someone to wire them since they are four wire LED and not five. I helped Randy @ Ute Bed do the install for $400, which was nice as he has a hoist, but not really necessary as it is a fairly straightforward swap. So, what? About $1000! What a deal! All aircraft grade aluminum. Bolted and molded together. This thing looks bomber.

 

It looks awesome! Seems like you got a good deal that would make the Ute bed worth it. Just out of curiosity though, why keep the stock bumper back there? I'm guessing to keep BSM?

 

You guessed it. I'll probably build something more substantial in the future. For now I'm going to paint it black so it doesnt stand out so much.
