Right on, Manual will solve over half the complaints on here.

Really? Because I've been sitting here with my finger on the phone button about to call and cancel my test drive/purchase. This is probably one of the bigger forums I've ever joined and it's hard to sift through everything quickly. I appreciate your reply and feedback. Is there one common thread on here about 3rd gen issues to look out for?

Just read any post by Smitty. He's had pretty much all of them.

Thanks! I plan on getting a manual (honestly, the biggest draw to the Tacoma for me) so hopefully I can avoid transmission issues. Thanks for the tip on the rear diff. -- I had come across a couple of posts referring to it, but nothing stating an exact problem with or without resolution.

I'm looking at a 4x4 double cab sport with Premium and tech package (no JBL), 6spd manual. I've got a dealership in the low $34,xxx range so we'll see how it goes.

Lately my tastes have skewed towards paradise valley instead of Scottsdale

All I know is @smitty99 is laughing at how far and how many pages he take a thread that has no value :D

I'd recommend test driving it. Just be willing to walk away if it doesn't live up to your expectation.

I like my truck but the rear end howls which I don't like. Hopefully there will be a fix for it sooner than later.

Thanks again. The one that I'm scoping out is, unfortunately, 2+ hours away. I'm not even sure how common a Double-cab, sport, Manual, with premium+Tech package comes up... so I was trying to jump on this one because there are only about 4 of them that I can find in my state (Ohio).

What I may do is slow down and NOT go check out the one tomorrow but make another appt. to look at the one at my local dealership. They have a TRD off road manual trans that I test drove and liked -- but only drove for about 20 mins. I may see if I can put a few more minutes in behind the wheel of that one and see if I can experience any of the common problems firsthand to see if they're acceptable to me or not.

I do greatly appreciate the replies on here so far. Good owner-community support is always helpful when picking a make/model.

This is similar to my taco - except I do not have the JBL upgrade and I personally LOVE this truck!! I have not had any issues, just good experiences and I expect this to last a long time ~12+ years. I would highly recommend the Tacoma, especially the MT.

    Agreed

Moonroof was my requirement thus I had the OR

However now I am a PRO whore and got used to not having moonroof

Albeit I hate not having a moonroof, the amount of inches the Pro adds to my Asian 2 inch penis, makes it all worth while :D

Plus I am looking forward to not being mistaken for swimming pool cleaners and gardeners, once I move to the Tundra

2016 TRD Sport 4x4 double cab.
Run it through a car wash and make sure water isn't leaking through the third brake light. Double cabs seem to have this issue but I believe they have it narrowed down to early builds out of Baja. Toyota must know something is up with them they have ordered a shipment of 4000 and have over 300 on back order.

2018 pro would be ideal for me

Keep it 18 months and 50,000 miles and get a new 2020

Also looking forward to the 300 series coming out soon

    Welcome to TW!

You won't regret getting the manual, just be aware it takes some getting used to. The throttle delay is what you'll probably pick up on right away, it makes getting the truck moving up a steep hill a bit tricky and rev matching is kinda hit and miss at times. The shifter has longer throws if you're used to a car, and when it's new it tends to be quite notchy. Just take it slow, let the revs come down between shifts and see what you think.

    Have fun!

    Frank

It might stall on a railroad track with a train coming and no time to do anything but bail and run for your life.
