Is there any sound difference / Horse power between the aFe and the TRD Pro Cai?

 

Yes to both!
Switched out my aFe CAI with air scoop for the TRD Pro CAI.
I loved the aFe....wife didn't (when on road trips it would wake her up when I mashed the pedal to pass etc), was too loud.
Interesting enough with TRD Pro CAI it definetly lost some of the get go. And it's at least 3 times as quiet.....I also have the TRD Pro exhaust installed.

 

Have you removed the charcoal filter from the TRD CAI?

Theoretically it decreases restriction due to the CARB requirement. It's located above the airfilter in the top cover. There's DIY posts here, search for TRD charcoal filter.

 

Thanks. I did do a bunch of reading on the posts about the charcoal filter. Almost all say there is no noticeable difference.
One interesting thing that I came across searching and reading about the charcoal filter removal....KN filters the oiled ones letting more dirt through the filter than just stock paper filters. The TRD Pro CAI is an oil filter. What's the difference? I wouldn't think Toyota would be selling an oiled filter if it is letting more dirt though??

 

TRD filters are made by AFE and claimed to have better filtration than K&Ns. I live in South Florida so not a lot of dust here but if I moved back to the southwest I would run a dry paper filter. I don't doubt that people have not felt a noticable difference after removing the charcoal filter but I removed it hoping my ovtuned ecu would adjust fueling for more air flow.
