I would be interested in under what statute/regulation/rule, state or Federal, you feel this is so--is it a specific part of your state's "lemon law"? Florida's has no such provision and is frankly is pretty much useless--we went through it (Florida's) with a 2016 KIA Soul* my daughter bought.

    -------------------------------
    * - It started out as an under-powered POS (it had a 6-speed manual--because it needed it to move at all); and went downhill from there.

"When a new vehicle has been purchased with a manufacturer’s warranty and it has a defect that substantially impairs its use and market value within one year of purchase and that defect is not repaired after a “reasonable number of attempts,” the consumer may
have recourse under Colorado’s Lemon Law. A court may order the manufacturer to replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price minus a reasonable allowance for use of the vehicle.

Under the law, a “reasonable number of attempts” to repair a defect applies when the same defect remains after it has been subject to repair four (4) or more times within the rst year after the date of original delivery. It also applies when the vehicle is out of service for repairs for a cumulative total of thirty (30) or more business days during the warranty term or one year after original delivery, whichever comes first."

    Way cool--I'd go for it.

FL statute has no such language--or didn't 1-1/2 years ago...

Arizona title 44 -1264 also, but it's not 30 business days, but 30 calendar days.

I rotated my tires this morning and as doing so I realised I had the superlative solution to Toyota's problems with the 228,000 Tacomas having leaking differential carriers--got back from the this afternoon's beer run and took a pic:

All they have to do is look back in their production records and determine how they assembled the rear-ends in June of 2009. That's when my truck (above) was made and for now eight years and 141k miles later (hit that during the beer run) it does not mist or weep or leak a drop of gear oil.

Sounds simple enough to me, if their records are insufficient I would (for a modest fee) allow them to examine my truck so that they might determine "what went right"...

People in states that have such language in their "lemon laws" should jump all over this and send Toyota a message. Confiscating someone's new or relatively new vehicle indefinitely, for some unspecified number of months, is 110% unacceptable. There is no way on God's green earth I would just shrug my shoulders and live with it...

I am curious, why would you be "scared" to refill the rear-end with the Amsoil juice?

Likely for fear that Toyota would point at anything to steer blame away from them for any problems with the differential.

"What? You didn't use the Toyota manufactured and specified gear oil? Well, there's your problem. Warranty denied"

It also has to be within one year of purchase and they have to be given time to repair it, which is up to the judges discretion. I looked into it with a lawyer friend, and he basically said, lots of luck going up against the team of Toyota lawyers! It seems, 80 days or less is how long this repair takes, and any judge will say, if you get your truck back in 70 odd days, you are out of luck.

Visited dealer yesterday for 15,000 service and got hit with recall.

How has the rental agreement worked? Do I get hit with bill and toyota reimburses?

Looking at the bright side, alot of really long road trips planned for that rental.

Toyota pays all, unless you add extra insurance yourself. Credit card filed for incidentals, normally not charged. You have to re-do the rental agreement every 30 days. Hold out for a truck or 4Runner - don't let them put you in Corolla.
