Oil drain crush washers

But why would you bring your truck to have the oil changed somewhere if you have a fumoto valve?

 

Why would anybody pay for something they are capable of doing themselves. 1 word- LAZY. I don't care. I make money off people that are lazy or don't know a single thing about the 30k+ piece of machinery they are driving.

 

But then why buy the fumoto valve

 

I still get metal.
Is this becasue they are not avaliable where you are?

 

No idea. But I've seen them before and I've turned them away. Company policy.

Just what I've read here but if somehow the fumoto gets smashed by a rock or branch generally the pan deforms. I have not read of any instances in which oil is lost however I'm sure there is an outlier case. Hearing about the pan denting actually makes me confident in the valve as it would seem the weak point is the flexible sheet metal which bend/dents not the brass valve or the pan drain weld-in nut. I suppose a branch that somehow gets up in that area would also be likely to grab the stock oil drain bolt, though perhaps not as much as the lower hanging fumoto.

 

There's always a chance..... there's also a chance a meteor will strike the Earth making this moot

 

Another shout out for the Fumoto valve...143,000 miles and counting.

 

I just wrap my drain plug with Teflon tape every time. It also makes it a little 'snug' when re-installing.

I use the Fram Extra Guard 3600 so it doesn't come with a new crush washer.

I know, my engine will probably start spinning bearings next week.....

 

Go to napa and get a nylon washer that is tight on the drain plug threads so when you screw it down on the plug it stays, then you never have to worry about leaks and it last's forever.

 

Nylon not last forever; it will eventually crack from the heat. Change every 3-4 oil changes; no reason to wait till it leaks - bad for the environment and the engine if you don't catch the leak.

 

In the last 30 years and 10 plus vehicles, I have never had a nylon washer become brittle or crack from heat and leak, some of these have had over 200k on them with no problems.

 

I'm paranoid about my Fumoto valve and planned on taking it off, but I haven't had an issue with it besides the self inflicted mental

I do enjoy the simple oil changes...

 

I've had them crack and become brittle; hence, my suggestion ... never had one leak, but it would have if I hadn't changed it. I, too, have been using them a long time, since early 1980's when pops started showing me to work on my own cars.

 

Too many failures with the Fumoto valve, to have me rely on it:

Even a warning on the Fumoto website:

"For extreme use, while Fumoto oil drain valves are manufactured to last for the life of your vehicle and to withstand normal wear and tear when used as designed, they are a mechanical device and caution must be used if they are subject to being struck by heavy objects, the ground or at a high speed. Total failure of the valve and loss of engine oil could occur if the valve is struck with sufficient force. "

God help you if you hit a road hazard!

 

Failure on a Tacoma will be rare; a crossmember protects the valve from debris. If you look under the car from the front, you will not see the valve as it doesn't hang below the crossmember line.

And those are not too many failures. Many are preventable; you should always look under your car any time hit something and check for damage and leaks.

 

I'm going to use a suggestion found in one of those links. A sacrificial ziptie to secure the lever, nipped off with a dyke when oil x time.
