Lost chrome wheel moldings, stripping

Spent some time removing the chome wheel well mounding and pin striping today. Took a good bit of work to clean up 18 years of grime under them. I wish I would have taken pics of the fenders right after I removed them. After cleanING and washing, I clayed, then wet sanded with 2000 grit and then compounded the areas. There's still a tad bit of ghosting from the pin strip, but Im not sure if you can see if from the pics. I also added full size mirrors from a 01-04 today.

Looks like I missed a touch of wax in the last photo, it's been corrected now.

How easy was it to replace the side-view mirrors? Just uninstall and the new ones bolt right in? Are they the manual operated mirrors? I'd like to get some of those too.

 

That does look good. I might just have to take mine off too.

Details on the mirrors would be good. Mine have the little levers inside to adjust them and I wouldn't mind going power.

 

Incredibly simple. Takes a good 10 minutes to do both. The 95-00 mirrors attach to the cab using bolts screwed into a threaded base, while the 01-04 mirrors uses threaded bolts and nuts to mount to the door. You'll need the right nuts (I want to say M10?) to attach the new mirrors.

Adding power mirrors is actually very very simple. If you can get the wiring pigtails for each mirror and the switch it's a matter of running 5 or so wires, 3 for motor signal and 2 for positive and negative.

If your truck has power windows and locks but not mirrors your truck may be already wired for power mirrors. I'm doing another power door conversion and I noticed the kick panel pigtails he sent me had existing wiring for power mirrors, but the truck only came with door harnesses equipped for speakers windows and locks.

Thank you. Mirrors were stupid simple and I was actually shocked that I didn't have any issues due to the tweeter pods I had previously installed. My old mirrors were manual and I had already installed tweeter pods from a 4-runner.

 

I found the mirrors on Craigslist. They are power mirrors but I'm just using the manually. Remove the little corner pod and then 3 nuts, clean the nasty from behind the old mirror(optional), bolt the new mirrors up and adjust.

 

That is great to know. My 2000 does have power windows and locks.

 

Here is a pic of the tweeter pod I had installed. First pic shows the 3 nuts(10mm socket) that hold the mirror on. I bought these tweeter pods on Ebay for less that $30. I did have to drill a hole to relocate the plastic insert that holds the top of the pod. You can see the old hole below the new hole in the pic. The location of this hole seems critical for exact pod placement. I took some careful measurements. I also had to trim about 3/16" off the bottom of the pod so it would fit. But once it's all together, it looks factory. I'm very particular and I'm very pleased with the mirror upgrade and tweeter pods.

 

Take the kick Panel off and look at the smallest connector with the least wires. Unplug it. There should be only two wires pinned on the plug for the speaker. If you look at the connector the door harness plugs into you may see several green wires also pinned but have no use. Those are for your power mirrors.

If you can find the right door harness it'll be essentially plug and play. Otherwise making a harness is really simple. Much simpler than what I did with wiring the power locks and windows.

 

Thank you. So, what all would I have to come up with? Door mounted switches, the harness that goes from the kick panel connection to the switch and then the harness that goes from the switch to the mirror connection?

 

First check if your kick panel has the following wires on the front left 'IH1' and front right 'IL2' connector. The diagram below is only for the driver's side but if you see about the same number of wires on IL2 then you're prewired for mirrors.

 

Looks like I am. This is behind the driver kick panel and appears to be what your talking about. So the harness plugs here and goes through the door hose conduit or are those wires already in the door?

 

...huh? That is a weird looking connector. That doesn't seem like the kick panel connectors I'm used to. Is that what the doors were plugged into?

Nothing is connected to it. Maybe I got the wrong one. I'll look again.

 

Can you take a picture of your kick panel and what ever wiring is there? Especially the connector I posted a picture of because that's what controls the mirrors.

 

That connector could be for a rear locker computer.

 

Ok, I bet this is the connecter your talking about. It has the door speaker wires in it. Looks like only 3 pins have connections.

 

That makes sense being that I don't have TRD.
