Most of the time renting is more up front than buying. Landlords make money on owning houses, plus have to account for anything going wrong in the house (water heater, furnace, etc) plus property taxes, on and on. If renting cost less nobody would own their home.

 

So you're telling me that people rent because it's more expensive than owning?

 

People rent because it's flexibility and lack of commitment lol

 

Not everybody has thousands of dollars to put down on a house in a place they aren't sure if they are going to be living at awhile.

If you're locked into an area and have the savings to put down money on a house, buying is the way to go. But if you are moving somewhere new and aren't sure if you want to stay there forever, you rent a place for a year+ and if you're happy you start saving for a house.

 

Blackfoot mud bogs were a blast. now to spend the next couple years cleaning mud off the truck.

 

a diy car wash place would be torqued if you pressure washed your truck there

 

I did it at my dad's house. 6inchs of mud in the bed. Thank God it's not a very big bed

 

I had my 95 toyota covered in mud but at the time I didnt have a place to wash it so I was forced to use a car wash. It took about $20 in quarters to get it clean...

 

I spent 3 hours pressure washing and it's still not clean.

Yeah i know im always saying i hate mud too. just got really board and missing moab so gave my self a reminder after 7 years of why i don't play in the mud. though it was nice spinning cookies around other bigger stuck trucks.

 

The mud part is fun...the mud falling off underneath for the next two months was not...

 

i spent 3 hours pressure washing washing mine and then im going to put a sprinkler under the damn truck tomorrow night and keep moving it around till it's fucking clean. there was an inch and a half of mud ontop of the engine.

My daily commute is going from 15mi a day to 46mi a day. Anyone have suggestions to ensure my "commuter" truck stays happy?

 

Park it and get yourself a corolla for the commute.

No, really, commuting miles are a waste on a fine, vintage 1st gen gem. Plus, you'll save money in fuel cost savings.

I think you missed my point.

My comments are very easy to pick apart. Especially if you start throwing out arbitrary numbers like the cost of the replacement DD. Also, you missed a key cost and that is the maintenance costs if you continue to pile on the miles on the Tacoma. Even further, once those miles are used up on the truck, you can never get them back. Plus, every time you drive any vehicle, you are exposing it. A daily commute increases the risk of getting in an accident. On these old trucks, even if they are insured, the insurance companies want to total them because they cost a lot to repair and their perceived (to the ins co) value is so low.

This is my $0.02 with regards to the question that was asked.

 

Thanks for the input guys! My truck is indeed my first gen gem and putting 1k miles on it a month makes me cringe, BUT it was purchased to be a daily driver.. That being said the commute will at most only last until spring so with the info provided I think sticking it out with her won't be as bad as I anticipated.
