If you want a 3rd gen I would recommend a 4 cylinder MT. Too much noise around the other transmission/engine configurations

    3rd gen SR5 wheels
Our 2016 Tundra has had the drivers seat replaced twice, shakes through the steering wheel around 70 dealer assumed it was a damaged rim from the factory replaced it, rotated tires, supposedly checked all front suspension/ steering components and still shakes, this is a shake not a vibration. At this point they assume its normal nothing they can do... Annoying whistle at steady speeds as well, completely throttle related, again normal. Tailgate bent from unloading machines, replaced once now bent again we've had Silverados and Sierras even a Dakota and Titan far longer with no tailgate issues.

Sadly I still like that truck more than this Tacoma so I guess he makes a point... My first gen tundra also had countless problems. Maybe I'm just unlucky, but every Toyota I've had has been a pos. I've owned a lot of vehicles to compare too and I won't be back.

I had a '98 AC 2.7 4x4 MT....BEST vehicle I ever owned...never broke down (in 185K miles of ownership), never got stuck (even in 2 ft of snow with no e-locker) and never felt under-powered. It just ran and ran and ran...now with kids I want a brand-new off the assembly line 2004 DC TRD OR. I'm getting old and I have to commute, so the AT is OK with me. :)

These newer trucks just aren't the same. They are nicer vehicles than the old ones for sure, creature comfort wise and in smoothness. But that simple anvil like reliability and sturdy "truck" feel is gone. Overly complex electronics have really changed things. Good luck with your decision.

    I recommend a 2nd gen. I cannot recommend a 3rd gen.

My only complaint about my 3rd gen is the trans since I have an auto (ect power fixes this) so if you're getting a manual I say 100% do it!

See if your local dealer will offer you an overnight test drive to get a better feel before you make your choice though.

My 3rd gen is my first truck and I love it. I haven't experienced any of the major problems(diff leak, transmission issue , etc...). I always get compliments from people around town about how good it looks. IMO if your looking for a truck in this class then you should get the taco. Don't get turned off from the issues you see on tacomaworld cause if you do have any problems warranty will take care of it for you.

Get it. I love mine. 6K and two months in. The manual transmission is very good. No issues.

Only thing I would change if I could go back is get a manual transmission even though my transmission works well I would wanna give the manual a try since those are rare to find in truck nowadays

16,000 Miles and I love my 3rd Gen. Would buy again. Every vehicle has their problems but most don't have issues. A manual will fix most complaints. Go for it!

No, they're the same. I've got a new off the assembly line 2.7 manual. The anvil feeling, I haz it.

Quite honestly nothing competes with the taco right now. Whether or not it has kinks to work out, unless you need more than the 7800 towing capacity I don't see a reason to get any other pickup.

    Edit: 6800 towing

You aren't wrong there, but the Tacoma is still a work in progress...glacial progress. The gm twins don't have it. The Ridgeline was made for women.

The problem is that the Tacoma is the best of bad choices. iE It's still a bad choice. I'm probably jumping out of the truck game until it gets it's shit together.

I disagree - I think the Tacoma is great choice! Lets see; four doors can easily fit a family and dog, VERY reliable, great re-sale value, safe, can haul, can tow, go off-road (if you want to), a blast to drive, and looks kick-ass.... what more do you need. 112XXmi no recalls, now howling, none of this crap that I swear folks on this forum actually look for until they convince themselves this truck sucks. Now, Smitty has a lemon, obvious to all or at least should be. EVERY single car truck, minivan, motorcycle will have a few lemons and a issue here and there. The difference most folks deal with it and do not bitch about it on a forum.

I've had mine for just over 3 months and had zero problems. Would absolutely recommend getting one. Great truck and it does everything I need it to.
