I know (from the OVTuning thread) that the second set of cats are one of the biggest restrictions on our 3rd gens. I have also read that the whole Spec-U exhaust can be pretty loud so I am wondering how just doing the y-pipe sounds if anyone has done it.

Couldn't be done without some custom welding for multiple reasons:

    - The Spec-U Flange uses a v-band, while your stock exhaust uses a bolt style flange.
    - The length and angle of the pipe before the muffler is different on both systems.

You could make it work with some custom welding, like I said, but I don't see the point in paying $1000 for the whole system and not using all of it. Just get the regular URD y-pipe if you just want the y-pipe and save yourself $500; it removes the two rear cats as well.
Also, if there are any gains to be had, they are because the system works as a whole, not just in parts.

Oops, that's what I meant, I guess I used the wrong terminology. So are there any gains from just the URD y-pipe? It would seem there should be some with 2 less cats.

Yeah, I have the regular URD y-pipe.... can feel some gains on higher RPM band, 4K RPM+. But I have it paired with a free flowing muffler as well (Magnaflow). Not sure how it would pair with a more restricted stock muffler setup. If you're worried about noise, just get a larger pass through muffler like the one that comes with the spec-u system (5x11x22). If it's still to loud for your taste, add a vibrant ultra quite resonator.

How do you think a URD y-pipe would sound on a TRD cat back. I was going to do the URD Spec U system but a lot of the guys were saying the Spec U y-pipe did not come with all the hangers. I didn't think the y-pipe removed the back cats just thought it gave more clearance and was not smashed like the factory one/

May want to ask @skyking3 he has this setup (URD y-pipe w/ TRD catback exhaust). He says it sounds pretty good. I have mine paird with a 18" Magnaflow (3" in/out) and Vibrant Ultra Quite Resonator. But yes, it does remove the rear cats... Which is a good thing.

May want to check the original thread here for some reviews and clips.

    *Note*
supposedly the clearance issues some us we're having have been worked out in the newer updated standalone y-pipe design.
