    I am almost ready to take the plunge and jump into a 3rd gen and have been looking for the past couple of weeks. I found a 2016 Limited with 15,000 on it for $36,000, after searching the vin it came back with a open recall for a leaking rear diff. Has anyone been able to negotiate a sizeable discount because of a recall on the car the dealership is selling?

    Would be fixed prior to giving it to you, I doubt you are going to get a discount on something that is easily and freely fixed.

    That's way too much for a used limited. I negotiated $34k OTD for a 2016 Limited with less miles than that, and passed when I found a new SR5 DCLB for $34k OTD. Tax, tag included.

    You won't get a discount for an open recall at all, that just doesn't happen.

    Thanks for the input. What made you choose the new SR5 over the limited?

    A licensed Toyota dealer cannot sell a vehicle (legally per NHTSA regulations, or per their agreement with Toyota) that is subject to an open safety recall, and where the remedy for said recall has not been applied.

    Even without such restrictions any dealer that sold a vehicle with an uncorrected safety recall issue would have to be a blithering idiot or crooked/sleazy as they come--one that I would run away from as fast as my legs could carry me...

    Sure, or even a sleazy used car lot that could claim they knew nothing of the recall. Was I interested in a '16/'17 Taco that might be an interesting negotiation--use the recall and case histories of those who have had there vehicles impounded for months as significant leverage--then if it's just weeping a bit tighten up the nuts, check the fluid, and be happy knowing that the truck is still eligible for the recall if needed...

    I agree with the "easily" part IF it is as dry as a bone (see image below) and all that Toyota plans to do is torque the differential carrier nuts. However if is not as dry as a bone "easily" goes out the door.

    axle drained;
    driveshaft comes off;
    wheels come off;
    brake drum comes off;
    brake shoes come off;
    brake lines disconnected;
    brake backing plates removed;
    axles removed;

    and now differential carrier can be removed;

    then:

    new gasket and differential carrier (maybe a new carrier assembly) installed;
    new axle seals installed;
    axles installed;
    brake backing plates installed;
    brake lines reconnected;
    brake shoes installed;
    brake drums installed;
    brakes bled;
    wheels go back on;
    driveshaft installed;
    axle refilled with gear oil;

    Piece of cake--not...

    From the notice to dealers (highlight added):

    Exactly, that is unless some vague state law (none in Mo.) prevented the sale -- of which I have never heard of.
