Vibrating Steering Wheel at speed

My steering wheel vibrates when going over 55mph. Is this a tire balance issue or just road vibrations or something else altogether?

Anyone have this issue?

 

Should I have a tire shop look at all four tires, or will it only be an issue with the front tires?

 

get all 4 tires balanced and hopefully the tread is still good on your tires

 

I have the same exact issue with 4 brand new tires . . . that were just balanced at the tire shop and an alignment that was just performed. I don't think it is necessarily tires out of balance or alignment. Is your truck lifted like mine? It may be related to lift somehow.

 

^^^The thing with the lift and alignment might be that they tried to restore it to the factory specs.? Mine is pretty bad too but I need to take it in to an actual alignment shop that can do it with my lift and I might need to get my tires balanced too.

Find a road force balancer they measure how out of round a tire really is, had same problem with Nitto's they were .030 out of round, went with BFG Rugged Trail mission accomplished. Tacomas don't need 8 ply or 6 ply tires the 4 ply is much easier to balance. If you have to sport huge tires most are 6 or 8 ply. For me nothing larger than 265/75/16's with the 5100's the ride is decent.

 

Most likely you have a tire out of balance or a bad tire. You should balance all four and make sure they roadforce the tires and if possible to balance them with fingers that fit in the stud holes so it is basically like it is on the truck. What size and kind of tire are you running?

 

Has anyone discovered a solution for this? I have the same problem with my truck which was just road force tested and balanced by a Lexus dealer. Would it be a good idea to swap rubber with another truck and see how she does? This is driving me NUTS!!!

Also: I just purchased the Toyo A/T 285/75R17 about a month ago with a bilstein 3" lift, diff drop and carrier bearing shim.

 

If it shakes at a certain speed, then your tire balance is off kilter. If it shakes at any speed, then it's the tire or something else.

 

I had the shimmy shakes in the steering wheel.
It is very annoying to feel that after you've spend 2k$ on wheel and tires...

The chevy dealer here charges $25 a tire to road force balance but it is worth every penny.

some people might not think of this one....but the bushing for your steering rack maybe worn out. i have yet to replace that to get rid of all the shake in my tires as it is worn. Ive had my tires balanced, still shook, but a little less, then i had my upper a-arm uniball replaced because there was alot of slack in that, and it got a little better. j

 

I had this same problem . . . . vibrating/shaking steering wheel between 50 - 60 mph. I took the newly balanced tires back to the tire store, and explained the problem and asked them to re-balance the wheel/tires then torque each wheel back on in a criss-cross fashion without using the air gun -- just a torque wrench. Problem solved! I think it sometimes has to do with the way the wheel seats to the hub and the use of pneumatic impact guns instead of torque wrenches.

 

First check your tire pressure, ill bet you those retards at the tire shop over inflated your tires. I fought that problem for a few weeks. I found that 28 all around works perfect. Check your tires when they are cold, and use a digital gage. oem is 26 in the front and 29 in rear. Make sure all of your tread is contacting the pavement, just like it reads in the owners manual, I think chris4x4 wrote a thread about tire pressure.

Also make sure if you have after market wheels that they got the correct offset of the wheels to oem specs. Tacomas are really sensitive to air pressure and offset.

 

sorry for the double post. I feel i need to mention that the retards at the tire shop sold me 8'' offset wheels (MB Worriers) and oem calls for 7'' (I think). So after several times of back and forth getting the wheels balanced and road force balanced nothing worked. So I had them put on some better wheels with OEM specs (at their cost) and my problem was solved. I should also mention they over inflated again (34psi). So all in all they messed up and it cost them some American Eagle Alloys.

 

I read those pressures too on my door jam but they are for different size tires

 

Try putting in the recommended psi for the size tires you have. 265/70/16 tires recommend 26 front and 29 rear. Try that and play with the pressure from there. Check out chris4x4s thread on tire pressure too.

Do you have after market wheels? If so what is the off set of the wheel?

 

The pressures on the door jam are not for 265/70/16 tires, does that matter? At least on my truck they are not.
