Yup Mapunapuna has hundreds and people are coming in everyday with the letter saying there's a remedy not knowing the parts are not in and more and more are getting held hostage everyday. Sad that Toyota can still keep the assembly line running but can't help the people with the parts... that already own the truck... wtf Toyota!!!

Thanks I've been here a while but never posted before, I traded in my '13 Taco access cab in on this new one because I wanted 4x4 and four doors, so far I'm really liking the '17

    Well....here we go....

Took my Taco in for 15k service and the rear-end inspection....I had already looked to see weeping and it was located at bottom left of pumpkin facing the driver.....I had made reservation for last Wednesday, but postponed until today because of family medical emergency...Asked the service advisor I've been working with to call me if anything would prevent me from that day...Never heard back and when I got there today, he was off......good start, right?......well.....got someone else and went though the issued from HPFP, LCA plugs and the famous rear-end leaking......he took notes and put on the R/O.....I asked since it was weeping where they store it if they keep it...He respond outside, but they detail the truck before return to include clay bar and battery replacement if required...I requested to see the vehicle on the rack and he said no problem.....

About a half hour later he came and got me and I was driven back to where my truck was parked..A tech got it and drove it to the lift.....guess what???? You are right.....the pumpkin was perfectly bone dry and looked like it came right off the show room floor....surprise, surprise, surprise.....but with a flash light you could see where the fluid had stains the diff....when I asked why it was like new when I have pictures of it weeping, everyone about wet there pants.....The dealer contends they did nothing and cannot explain my pictures....They said all they can do is re-torque per the procedures.....its funny it was so clean. With 15,718 miles on the vehicle with many trips to the desert and mountains in rain, mud and wet conditions, not to mention a few truck washes at various places, there was not one speck of dirt, mud and evidence of water anywhere on the pumpkin.

When I got the paperwork back, it stated inspected, leak found, repaired.....the parts used was an O-ring.....when I questioned them I was told there was a mistake...He showed me the tech notes that stated " no leak found and torqued bolts.....service advisor took the original paperwork from me and printed a new one....I asked for copy of the original and he refused to give it to me saying it was wrong.....

I asked to see service manager.....he took me there and told him there was a mistake and he reprinted new paperwork but I wanted copy of the original and he did not give it to me...then I went into my story and told him I was not happy and asked how they plan one answering the fact I had pictures from the day before....he say he did not know....I told him I was going to monitor this issue and if I see weeping again, I will be back.....next time with my lawyer.....He said fine but I think it will be alright.....

BTW, the service advisor said there is no reason for anyone to wipe clean becasue they get paid a lot of money to fix them....I said I doubt that because after keeping a rental truck for 75 days at $30 a day ($2250) it cost Toyota money....but maybe not eh dealer...

Bottom line, I will monitor and if seepage comes back, go to a different dealer.....I was told that Toyota dealers do not share information on vehicles foremother dealers....I can't believe that.....Lexus does, all across the nation.....we'll see what happen and keep updating here

I had the "bone dry on lift" situation. It's leaking. Clear as day. I have a dozen pictures over the last couple of months to prove it.

When I took it in, it was dry as hell on dealership lift. I have some posts on in back in the thread. I just looked the other day. Still leaking.

If mine leaks or weeps again, I am going to another dealer as they don't have vehicle communication from dealer to dealer

They absolutely do. They are blowing smoke it they say otherwise.

If you can see your own service records online, they damn sure can see all that info plus some.

These dealerships are doing as much harm to Toyota as Fiat dealers did to Fiat in the late 70s. They assume every customer is dumb as shit--and treat them all that way...

I just went in and renewed my service loaner vehicle agreement. 30 days in as of today. Asked my SA for an update and she said, "It could take 3-6 months" when initially she said, "2 weeks up to 2 months". No update on parts other than, "they've been ordered". Have any of you taken your insurance coverage down to limited liability while your truck's being held hostage or just kept it at full coverage the entire time? I already put a temporary hold on my SiriusXM account like some others have suggested.

The entire business model of "Dealerships Monopoly " is based on deceit ,fraud ,waste, and abuse.Congress receives too much money from wealthy dealership owners and the manufacturers to change the laws that would allow buying directly from the manufacturer.

My dealership told me that they had the gaskets but were waiting on the bolts from Toyota. I just checked with a bolt manufacturer to find out what the lead time would be on a custom order of 10 bolts without expediting charges. The estimate was around 2-3 weeks depending on where the diameter and threading fit into their schedule, and that most of the time it would be closer to 2. The time for 10,000 would be 2 weeks as they could absorb the 90 minute setup time for one individual order. That was standard, not expedited. Seems to me that if Toyota gave me the specs I could order my own custom bolts for just my individual truck for less than what they are paying for 2 weeks worth of rental. Gaskets should be even faster to turn around.

Maybe I am missing something, or maybe this is less about parts availability and more about foot dragging because they are not quite sure that the fix is an adequate long term fix and don't want to do it twice on the same vehicles. Perhaps they are only releasing a few parts for the trucks held longest knowing it will work for the short term but limiting their exposure for multiple fixes to a few vehicles. This just doesn't meet the sniff test. Again, maybe I am missing something.

There's a whole lot about this that fails a "sniff" test. To me one of the most notable being if there is no leakage (define that as you will) re-tightening the original "18 lb·ft" nuts is OK--just torque 'em up and all is fine. But if their is leakage observed, any leakage even weeping, then in addition to a new gasket the nuts must be replaced with new nuts torqued to 28 lb·ft--huh?

While at first I was viewing this as a production line failure to properly torque the carrier nuts, or some problem with the nuts themselves, my gut is now telling me that the new supposedly "higher grade" nuts are actually a sort of "in-the-field" test fixtures to identify weak studs; that may have stretched under the initial 18 lb·ft torque. I have seen anecdotal reports indicating that some Toyota technicians have snapped carrier mounting studs when applying the "fix" which lends a bit of credence to this position.

The "new" nuts and the 55% higher torque with the same studs may be a device to identify and weed out the defective original studs--if they can handle 28 lb·ft they're OK, otherwise the poor dealer will have to replace them when they snap...

Exactly what happened to me. The weep fix 28 ft-lbs broke two of mine.

When did this did you seek info on availability of bolts or nuts? Nuts of a specific strength specification are generally much more available--then again we are talking about potentially 2.28 million of them (228,000 * 10)...

It is actually more to do with cost. Publicly held companies measure earnings every quarter. Costs vs expenses vs sales, etc. if Toyota spent the coin to get all the parts made and shipped, it would be very noticeable in the quarterly earnings and look bad this impacting the stock price. What makes no sense but is standard operating practice with these big traded companies is it is better to spend 10,000 dollars over 12 months than to spend 6 thousand all at once. Because if you space it out over 4 quarters, 10,000 is 2500 a quarter which looks what better than spending 6000 in any one quarter.

See Toyota would actually save a bunch of money in rental car costs by just getting the damn parts made and trucks fixed, but that would look bad on quarterly earnings possibly causing the stock price to drop causing them to loose valve which is money.
