Back in WV my buddy and I built a tower stand using #1 phone poles 30' ft in length, sunk 6 feet in the ground ( 6 of them) and a 12x8 platform with a kneewall all around. We bow hunted out of that monster all the time.

has anyone noticed many winter kills? Ive seen about 4 this year, and I havent even gotten into the woods yet. Its a pretty heavy snowed winter here so I think the animals are struggling, but with the rain the last couple days its definitely melted a lot of the snow so that should help out the big animals.

any day you dont go is a lost opportunity...and high probability that monster buck or animal you are chasing will come out ;) Happens to me all the time during bear hunting season :)

For mostly any Texas hunters since here is where the most axis deer are.
Get a HOOCHIE MAMA elk call for axis. Practice watching TV or something. if you've heard them before you can get real damn close. Cover end with one hand like muffin it but experiment.
I've gotten to where the bucks will answer back and at times just show up.

    Do you bow hunt?

I can give you the name of an affordable bow only ranch outside of San Antonio.

    This was taken Tuesday.

Yeah I bow hunt, I think Axis deer would be on my bucket list of animals to kill with a bow. So far Ive only shot, deer, one elk cow and one grouse;)

Over the past few months, I've seen a lot of young whitetail fawns. More than usual this time of year too, living and killed on the roads.
Just seems strange, like the rut happened much later than "normal".

Wondered if anyone else is seeing this too?

I've seen a few mature deer. None where I hunt.

But that would mean I'd need to drive out to where I hunt to see them lol!
Need to get my new stand setup and my trail cam. I'm behind, once again!

The rut happened later here than normal, too. The fawns are still TINY. Much smaller than normal at this time of year.

I don't have a camera out, but I was going by one of the fields I hunt a few days ago and there was a spike, 4, 6, and a big 8 point in the field, along with about 10 does.

They planted the field in soybeans this year, so that's exciting.

Thats awesome! I can't wait to see the activity change once all of my food plots grow. For now, just keep putting mineral blocks out in front of cameras. I'll be putting a 4th camera out this weekend in an area I think the big boys are bedding...I hope I'm right!
