That's exactly what I'd do.

Actually, it's almost already what I do by myself. I have one account that I put enough in to cover the mortgage, truck and house insurance, property taxes, and heating oil. The rest goes into my normal account where I cover anything else. Any excess from that goes into savings.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about someone paying toward my mortgage, though. That gets to be a tricky situation because if something happened I don't want anyone to be able to lay claim to some part of the ownership.

 

Better off having them pay because if shit hits the fan they can argue rights to some of it even if they never put a dime into it

 

They can't claim anything if they're not in the deed anyway. So collect that money hehe

This. The way the courts work in my state it'd be considered joint property if it ever went to court, even though the deed and mortgage are in my name. So she may as well pay her half, lol.

When my gram died it was the same way. We found nearly $10K hidden in books, under mattresses, etc. She lived through the depression and never trusted the bank to handle her money. She also never threw anything away once it stopped working, so we had to rent a huge dumpster to get rid of all of the broken appliances that she had stored in the attic.
