Interesting. Thank you! A lift is on my waiting list of things to do with the stuff I've done to it already.

The best vehicle talk. I will throw in my 08 Xterra 4x4 or my 12 jk sport with a lift and 35's. Don't get me wrong I love my Toyota. And lucky for me no problems at 8k on concrete. But the other two cars were a lot of fun. Both had recalls and there own gremlins inside. But with every car I buy I have to fix little things continuously.

I think for folks like us who are enthusiasts we will naturally find through communication or our own experiences that every platform has its shortcomings whether these items are intentional or not. I know with the second gen, although I am very pleased with mine being the newer of them, it still has its quirks. If you accept that you are ok with deviating from factory (I had this dilemma at one time), then eventually you will find many items could of been designed better as aftermarket products help expose this.

It is unfortunate that the growing pains of the third gen seem to be significant enough that some of the things that have been taken for granted seemed to have been overlooked in cases. When that happens, you just mod to over-engineer it and then bam you are back to being solid. Im sure in a few years the third gen will become the new envy of more taco owners.

33k miles. My truck had been absolutely perfect, but I'm taking it in for a weeping differential tomorrow. It is not on the recall list, so hopefully they do not confiscate it.

    Strike 1

I'm just glad it didn't wait until 36,001 miles to leak. Ain't even mad.

has anyone who has not had the leak thought about putting
some clear sealant around the 3rd brake light?

I was thinking similar, although maybe remove the brake light first and then put sealant underneath the light housing? My thoughts were that this might help to hide the sealant and keep it clean from an appearance perspective. I say this loosely though as I do not own a third gen.

RTV Silicone might be a temporary fix but a better long term fix would be a properly sized gasket or manufactured-to-fit seal around the light (specifically for the assembly) rather than just squirting some goopucky around it and calling it a day. Might as well throw some duct tape in there too while you're at it. That's like something my grandpa would do to fix his 1950's willys or an old aluminum jon boat. Not really an option I'd like to pursue on a nearly new $35k-$40K Truck.

Not RTV or clear sealant for myself.

I've used this 3m Strip caulk with success on water leaks at the dealership in the past. It's not as permanent, but will conform well when used properly. I'm not sure if the formulation is the same, but mine is nearly 18 years old and still pliable and tacky.
I'll likely pull the headliner on mine to check the seal before the rainy season starts next year. Too much of this leaky shit going on.

Maybe some of the daring ones will attempt this on their own. Here's the exact stuff.

I figured clear(to hide it) would do just that. My thought with this was NOT
to remove it if there was no issue so as not to create one...I'm scared to even touch it! :D

I have the leak. As I have posted in other threads my service manager said silicone or sealant voids the warranty and they will not replace at their cost if you muck up the assembly. They told my to put clear packaging tape over the seams. There are over 350 third brake light assemblies on back order and Toyota ordered an additional 4000 from the manufacturer that are supposed to be delivered sometime in September. I did call Toyota customer service but was informed by their part location "specialist" that there was nothing they could do to speed up the process. I would at least call them and get a reference number so if you have mold or other issues down the road there is a record. The service managers have been informed of this issue by Toyota and to expect people bringing in their trucks for replacement. They have to replace the entire third brake light.
