The ring gear/flexplate has nothing to do with the crank position sensor. It is mounted much further forward on the engine and picks up from a specific timing rotor on the crankshaft.

Then hold them on the carpet at the dealership. No one will call you from Toyota for complaining on an Internet forum.

Well that would definitely complicate cleaning since that's a tiny hole lmaoo!

Edit: That being the case thought (internally housed), why would it need much if any coating at all??

I wouldn't put any stock on what Toyota or any other maker publicly states in these matters as they have to be sanitize to avoid any unforeseen liabilities that may arise as a consequence, just like the TSB and diff language used. The actual repair procedure tells more about the problem.

Moreover, you bring up an interesting point I hadn't thought about, that being inspecting the CPS for unusual deposits and cleaning. I would use electric cleaner, but now will take it out on my next service and look at to see if It has any special coating to be aware of hmm.

    Cheers!

Replacing a sensor when you have a bad timing wheel is fixing the wrong end of the parts chain. This is going down the path of floor mats causing a throttle problem. If it was a bad sensor and a bad timing wheel why doesn't it have issues from the time the motor was first started. The parts were no further or closer than the day they were first assembled. Putting the hall effect sensor next to the exhaust system was a bad move. You heat up any electronics it is not a good Idea. This extra coating bs is for the sheep. If it had extra coating it did on day one so why does the engine run at all. I'll bet the integrated exhaust manifold or the raised catalytic converter is going to be the culprit. You watch next will be a bolt on heat shield for the sensor.

In the automotive world and recalls, it's about damage control. If you can come up with a plausible cause and resolution (and the data to back it up), you buy yourself some time to find (and find a solution for) the actual problem. At some point they will probably try to pin this on a tier 1/2 supplier to clear their name.

So, I ran through most of the premium I had left in the tank and refilled with my tried and true BP 89 last night. Also reset the battery (which I hadn't done after replacing the CKP this time as of yet). Ran the same, heavier steering still present, didn't feel any stutters though, and MPG on the way in was almost 21 (and I was having to "get on it" a bit more since it's relearning...).

Still, low ignition timing seems to be an issue? and, of course I still log misfires on every trip - this time sprinkled throughout the drive and not just after startup. That said, I felt like the truck was driving decent - just not as well as it has. I guess consistency was never meant to be a friend of the Taco (at least with this version of the software..).

Looks like when you get those high spikes in load or rpm, it misfires.
Ever log any misfires before it's warmed up?

Yes, generally I log a misfire or 3 after a cold start when pulling out of my driveway within the first couple of minutes before it's warmed up.

I probably would have logged them that way this AM, but I didn't connect my OBD until it had somewhat heated up (3-4 minutes into my drive)

Still misfires, but today only shortly after pulling out of my neighborhood. Didn't feel bogged, shifted decently, but steering was still very heavy and every bump in the road was jarring w/o much to soften it. It's driven much better than this. I will say that I hit a record high MPGs on the way in though... before my initial CKP replacement, I was getting 16-17mpg on the same trip, then 19-20 after replacing with "89", this morning I got 22mpg with my "98" sensor. Hmmm...

Honestly man, I think you may read too much into the variances that this truck has in driving behavior and making correlations to things that aren't really correlated.

I can't disagree there - wandering in the dark trying to understand why the constant variability in drivability and enjoyment and it is a fools errand for sure...

Yeah I don't think a CKP sensor is ever going to effect steering feel or dampen the ride on a rough road.

Not directly, no. But I can tell you for a certain fact that when I first replaced my CKP from my stock one, I instantly felt an easiness in the steering that had NEVER been present with this truck then slowly got heavier intermittently but still sometimes "easy" and then has gotten back to just being heavy all the time. It makes no sense - agree. But I've had my power steering inspected (by the dealership which may not be worth much considering my experiences) and fluid is good. It's just not fun to drive like that - the difference in steering feel is night/day. When it's good I look forward to the drive and enjoy the truck, when it's heavy like that its just jarring and uncomfortable. If I can't get it to consistently drive in a manner I enjoy, I will have to consistently drive something else once it makes financial sense to do so...
