I have some rust starting on the pinch weld on the bottom of the cab, under the doors. Looks like someone used it as a jack point once. it's not bad yet, but im wondering if someone can tell me how to nip it in the bud now before it gets bad? I dont have step-ups so it will stand out pretty bad if the rust spreads

Your best bet is to sand it down, use a rust stopper acid etch, then prime and paint. Be it POR-15, KBS-Coatings, Bedliner, or whatever else

I used to do a lot of panel replacement and roof repair. I highly recommend staying away from POR15. It never holds up.

I used to do a lot of sheet metal fabrication. Installing quarter panels repairing rust holes in roof, door corners, floors, Etc

I'd see a lot of customers at some point use por-15 and it didn't hold up. I personally only used it once on a Bronco tailgate, it was media blasted and impeccably cleaned. The tailgate didn't have rust through yet. My intention was just to stop the rust while I did the body work over the year. Before I got to every thing, the tailgate had rusted through.

That's my own experience with it and I'm anal about prep.

I've seen it break down and just not do what it's advertised to, even painted over. I don't trust it.

Actually I'm remembering my friend bronco recently had the same issue. He took his apart, pressure washed, let dry then wire wheeled the area with a dremel. Inside and out. Same thing happend a few months later. He was pretty bumbed though I warned him. I'm sure some people have had better experiences. But I'm here in San Diego. The salt air near the beach is really the worst thing we have going as far as rust cause.

I have used POR15 on non-body parts with not so great results. :( Kinda bummed me out, because going on, it looked very promising.

I've used POR15 over the years with very good results. I do use the metal prep spray though.

Not holding up is what I'm questioning. Not sure what your talking about. It is not a UV stableproduct, if you didn't add a UV top coat or some sort then I could see things going wrong with it. As it is I use KBS-coatings, essentially the same stuff, and the only issues I've had with it is fading because I don't care to put a UV coat on it.

My POR-15 seems to be holding up just fine, we'll see though.

So how would a body shop prevent the return of rust? The roof on my 2007 has a huge stripe of flakey rust right down the middle. Never seen another truck look as bad here in drought dry California. I don't want to drop $2k on a prep and paint job only to have it return. I fact, I'm considering sand and spraying it myself with my HVLP gun...did a pretty good job on my old trailer with tractor paint...
