still getting used to all the squeaks, whines, and rattles of my new to me rig, but i could use input from everyone (granted i know it's hard to diagnose a noise/symptom you can't see or hear).

i've got a higher pitched whine on my Runner that is most noticeable when started cold and sitting at idle because of the higher idle RPMs. sitting at idle in neutral, when i disengage the clutch (press the pedal to the floor) the whine goes away. when i release the pedal and the clutch engages the whine/noise comes back. i just noticed this noise/whine yesterday (had the truck about 4-5 days), and also the whine/noise seems to get quieter when the truck warms up and the coolant temp levels off.

when driving, the whine/noise rises with RPMs and when i disengage the clutch and shift gears, the whine will still be present and hang a second or two after i have the pedal pressed all the way down while shifting, then it goes away as usual with the pedal pressed, and then it returns when i finish shifting and lift off the pedal and get back on the gas.

when i sit in neutral, the whine immediately goes away when i press the pedal, ie, there is no "hanging" of the whine so to speak.

according to the 2nd owner (who owned the car 1 year and basically let it sit) the OG owner who had the truck the prior 18 years replaced the clutch, just don't know when (just crossed the 78k mile mark yesterday).

i will say despite the whine the clutch feel is great, no slipping, and shifts are easy and smooth.

the reason i ask is because i thought typically a throw out bearing makes noise when you press the clutch pedal versus my whine/noise goes away when the clutch pedal is pressed...

still sound like a throw out bearing or maybe something else?

    thanks!

socalkid, if no noise in neutral regardless with clutch engaged (pedal up) or disengaged (pedal depressed), then it seems to me the prob is in the trans. Clutch disengaged, input shaft to tranny not spinning, clutch engaged tranny spinning. You can lift the rear end, try it in all gears, if noisy igearn all gears but neutral, most likely a common like the cluster. I'm no trannyman so maybe someone with more trans experience will chime in. Peace

    hey miloaksrider, thanks for replying.

actually the whine is there when in neutral, the noise is there regardless if in neutral or in gear. the noise goes away only when I press the clutch pedal. if I'm at a stop and in neutral while at idle, the whine immediately goes away the moment the clutch pedal is floored. when driving, the whine will go away when I floor the pedal to shift, but it will "hang" a second before going away, ie, it doesn't go away as quickly compared to when at idle.

hopefully this helps and clarifies things

Sounds like a typical R150F to me.

that's what i'm wondering, maybe just the typical sounds of a 20yo Toyota manual tranny??? its been 10 years since i sold my old 98' Tacoma 4cyl 4x4 that had the R150F so i'm trying to rack my brain if that sound was normal or not but just cant remember, im wondering if i should just chalk it up to BAU especially considering the clutch was replaced at some point and given that it shifts/drives great!

Mine has the same issue. Whines when in neutral, goes away when clutch pedal pressed. Whines when pedal released, gets louder the higher the RPM.

Shifts fine, clutch feels fine. Kinda stumped myself. I'm going to change fluids soon and see if that helps.

I remember someone mentioning it possibly could be the input bearing in the transmission in this situation @mechanicjon

Input bearing in trans. If its abnormal for you trans. Unfamiliar with what would be a normal noise for your trans. If its loud enough to hear distinctively. I'd say its abnormal.

thanks maul, only difference i would say between what im hearing and that person is their noise seemed to be tied to the engine/acceleration whereas mine comes and goes with the clutch... clutch pressed, no noise. clutch out, noise. also saw these on T4R.org:

the first thread seems similar to what im observing but the noise im picking up on the video is much different than mine. my noise is much more like continuous chirping/whine whereas the noise in the video is much lower pitched and sounds more like metal on metal.

beyond running through the truck i'm having the shop do a drain/fill of the tranny & rear diff fluid, curious to hear what they think about the clutch noise...

Have you checked your clutch pedal free play?

hmm, didn't think to because the clutch doesn't feel like its slipping/dragging, the pedal feel is solid (engages/disengages cleanly) and shifts are smooth... am i missing something?

so this came out of the transmission when changing the fluid. I guess (at least) one thing had to be wrong with this too good to be true rig. the silver lining, my shop seems to think there's still plenty of life left in the tranny but referred me to a tranny mechanic for a 2nd opinion. consensus was that it's not the throw out or input shaft bearing, but something else. I'll report back when it gets diagnosed, but for now, the noise doesn't bother me, it shifts fine, and there's new fluid in there so I'm not losing sleep.

Mine makes this noise, it's normal. I'd just drive it and be happy if it shifts good.

I personally wouldn't invest much having the Tranny diagnosed. If it shifts fine, I'd leave it be. Change the fluid more often... Just be on the lookout for a new tranny. I see them for $300-$600 often.

I see the tranny he has, W59, for $150 regularly. It's a common tranny and very reliable if your engine is under 200hp.

    Ah I thought he had a R150...

Even more so to just go with a low mileage used Tranny.

nah im with you, my shop owner gave me the cell phone of the tranny shop owner and said give him a call so he can hear it, type of thing...

3rd gen 4cyl Runners have an R150 (pretty sure same as 1st gen Tacomas) but the point is definitely taken...
