3d CAD models?

did a search, both google and here. Seems there is some 2nd gen CAD models out there, anybody know about 1st gen options?
Just a guy, gonna take a class on Rhino and have some hopes and dreams of maybe designing a roof rack or bumper for myself. Would be nice to have a model to start with.

 

I got this 1996 model from someone on TTORA a few years ago. I started converting the mesh into something usable in Rhino but never completed the job.

 

CAD models are nice but you can go old school with cardboard. If your cutting and shaping pieces in your garage just do research, find bumpers you admire and come up with your own interpretation. Work one piece at a time

If your using a cnc plasma table a CAD model will benefit you to get the exact dimensions

I use Libracad freeware software. Its more of a 2d program. It works great for what i do and files are correct to type to run on plasma or water jet.

I'm thinking of a hybrid plate/tube bumper for the rear. And yeah, thinking if I can get a file to a fab shop to have pieces cut/bent for me then it would save me a lot of time rather than going low-tech and using an angle grinder to cut pieces out. And it'd be nice to play with design on the computer and see various designs before committing to something.

That cargo rail is actually something I've looked at. Cool to see how somebody else used it. I've also been looking at the Rhino Rack roof tracks, and then using 80/20 extruded aluminum for the cross bars, just need something to join the 2 together. Might do a Prinsu style knock off....I'd like to keep it as low profile as possible, maybe 3/4" off the roof at the center.

 

80/20 is awesome to work with. It's a big boys erector set.
