Toyota: Why pay for resale value if you never intend to re-sell? (yes, I changed the title)

So you don't like a truck that holds its resale value? Manual is getting hard to find in these trucks but atleast Toyota is offering a manual tranny even though they are more expensive. The only other truck to have a manual as an option is a 2500 and up RAM. No other manufacuturer offers a manual truck. If the used market isn't worth it the only other option is buy new. Find a base and make it what you want. 2WD is still made because their are so many people that don't go offroad and no need to buy 4x4 to pose. Also a lot of companies around here use tacomas as fleet vehicles and it's less maintenance, better MPG, cheaper, and easier to work on. If you want a truck to hold up to your standards than you must build it yourself and make it what you want/need

Well, I think your line of reasoning has a certain merit, but if we take any resale value out of the equation for me, the initial extra cost of new is hard to swallow. Of course looking for a unicorn is a PITA also... meanwhile I have no reliable transportation, which is also a consideration... I am at what in physics they call the "triple point", where I am about to go into 3 different states of irritated/disenchanted or impulse buying all at once. :)

Get a base, I didn't want all that crap and chrome so I just got bare bones to make it to fit my needs. What do you need the truck for, fast high speed? What's it's main terrain it will see that is most concerning. Also if your irritated don't do an impulse buy. It will get you to pissed and keep you in that state longer haha

...I think this is where the commercials and car-reviewers tell me to say that all you need is a Honda Ridgeline. It's really all the truck that anyone will EVER NEED. And it has a trunk!

Just kidding! Seriously, don't impulse buy - you'll just be mad and hate your truck in addition to your job - which would suck.

True. I want the truck for trail driving and off-roading about 20% of the time. Then long distance highway commuting for work. I will be living next to the state forest fire roads so anticipate a lot more trail use than the average person. I need: clearance, traction, fuel economy, ability to carry a dirtbike. I do not need: power options, backup cameras, "infotainment center" etc...

Seems to me that you need to concentrate on putting money into older trucks. Or try a Ford or Chevy and see what your experience is with a "domestic " brand. Either way, good luck and keep us updated.

I think by those criteria you are stuck with older body styles - no matter the brand.

I may be... I do not think it's a good return on investment for electronic gadgets to be part of the cost that I actively dislike. I sense the poster above you is smirking a bit at the thought of "Domestic" brands... in truth I have no damn idea what to do... Not coming from a 'truck family" I have no dog in the domestic brand fight and no experience with them... I'm completely ignorant.

There is an old joke my Aussie friend tells about the Hilux(Tacoma)... he and his mates would always say "They last forever, can't kill em"... but then after someone stopped driving one the answer when asked why they stopped driving it would be "Well, the case cracked, the transmission went out, the power steering rack was bad..." then they'd invariably say "Just wore out!".

No no. I was just wondering. California is the same with outrageous prices.

Do you know the national market very well? Is there a bigger markup in Florida?

I've got a 2002 2.7 4x4 extended cab, manual & that truck just keeps on trucking. I mean I haven't even put a water pump on it. It still runs like a champ. Yes it has a shit ton of miles but it keeps running with no leaks, check eng. lamp, or oil usage and is fun to drive. I did purchase a 17 with all the bells & whistles and if it gives me half the life as the 2002 I would say i got my moneys worth. Just my 2 cents worth :) Another thing, for 1300 I could put another engine in the 2002 & run it for another 300,000 :)

Not smirking at all about domestic, my Taco was built in Texas after all, just offering suggestions, you might also think about an older jeep or rover.

Probably just like in California. I just bought my wife a basic sr5 4x4 4runner in California for 42k. Moved up to Reno Nevada and my wife's uncle just bought a brand new 4runner TRD Pro for 35k. :annoyed::annoyed::annoyed:

So yeah there's definitely a big markup depending on where you live.

Keep looking, you'll find something. I just checked CL in Orlando and it seems like the prices range from 10k-22k. Your truck is out there. You just have to find it.

Regulations have forced the prices up as well. Cars and trucks are now required to have a dozen airbags and backup cameras. Many manufacturers are having to use direct injection now for fuel economy, and the new 3.5 combines it with port injection to keep the valves clean... and that's not cheap. And then when you get into the transmission they're having to add more gears, also for fuel economy reasons.

Also, most people today won't buy a vehicle without Bluetooth and a way to play Pandora, so here comes the built in microphone, the steering wheel controls, and the touch screens.. all of this stuff ain't cheap. And of course the latest thing now seems to be Apple CarPlay, which is over my head.

Used vehicle prices aren't 'controlled' by the manufacturer, supply and demand affects prices. Tacomas sell so well that Toyota doesn't offer many incentives when new. That helps keeps used values high, on top of fast turn overs for used. If no one bought them, then prices would be lower. Sounds like you're SOL.

if your buying a truck for as much offroading as your saying why not just buy an older model, well, anything and custom build an offroad rig for that 22k. not sure why your complaining about them because they hold value.
