Thanks for remembering us! After 33 years (and still serving) your appreciation is noted. It was nothing like this after I returned from VN. People actually spat on us and called us baby killers. It's great knowing the support we have from the American people....

    .

33 years ago was 1977 .... RVN was over by then.

Last civilians (embassy staffers) & embassy troops were air lifted (off embassy roof) in spring or summer of 1975.

But most of the US ground troops were out before then ... the ARVNs were running the show in 1975 when they got their azz kicked by the NVA.

Did this from memory, without googling and could have made a mistake ...

Thanks SOSPILOT for picking up on this.... I first went in the USMC in 1970...Viet Nam was going pretty good. Albeit not as good as TET in 68 but still it was happening. My deployment was in 1971 and I got out of the Corps in 72. About 7 years later the military was screaming for folks. Not sure if your old enough to remember that and I reentered active service this time with the Army. I was to old to fly with any other branch. Been with them since Desert Storm, Somailia, Bosnia, and OIF and OEF. Now on 1 Feb (that's next year 2011) I will hang it up for good...I am ready. Again thanks for calling me out on this as I ususually just lump all my active service together as "I thought" most people would have been able to figure out a break in Svc. Just to clear things up a little bit better I am currently 58 years old.

Soon to be E-5 USAF. AMMO. Without us the AF is just a glorified airliner.

So we have you to blame for:

    • Those 10 million digit passwords where we have to use at least one character from every language known to man, including some dead ones...and we have to change them every two weeks.
    • The CBT that most people just buzz through
    • The lack of access to eBay, Facebook, decent porn, and this site.
    • the little warning that our "activity is being monitored" when we try to access "bigbooty.com"
    • not pushing the USAF to adopt Mac's!!!

Sorry for the confusion ... I saw the previous post on the "split service" ... and yes, you have had a long, varied and fruitful military career.

I am 64 and one of the older geezers on here (RVN tour 1967-1968). Got banged up in RVN and was boarded out on a medical and later got a full disability retirement.

Now, I work with veterans (as a volunteer) helping them get their medical and/or disability bennies.

    Congrats on your upcoming retirement.

PS ... If you ever file a claim with the DVA .. make sure you have good documentation.

Having a drink sometime sounds cool. ... :D
Hang on to those SMRs and tell your buddies to do so too. The VA is getting even tougher on the documentation and a lot of the field records are somehow getting lost.

This may not be the right thread to say this in, but I wanted to say thank you to all those that serve (or who served in the past). I appreciate the everything you all go through and the sacrifices you make in order to protect, prevent and perservere!

One of my biggest regrets is not ever serving my country in the armed forces.

Hey Chase if paid your taxes and supported the military that is enough in itself. YOU HAVE SERVED!!!

I get so tired of the snot nosed kids who carry signs and protest and are drawing on govt benefits and have never worked a day in their life. Disagreement I can accept but it is the disrespect that bothers me. You have recognized the necessary evil in our world...the maintenance of a standing army. It is to bad armies even exist but without them we would not understand the sacrifices for our freedom....

way off topic, but I actually had a patient a few months back that was STILL active duty... and was drafted to go to RVN! yeah, probably the only AD guy I'll ever meet that was in The Nam.
