Damn, that is steep. I remember the fan motor for my Civic being in the $40 range, so it looks like Toyota is gouging us pretty hard on an unreliable piece of hardware.

My dealer tech said they've seen a bunch of Turd gens coming in with the HVAC blowers grenading. Funny because I hadn't seen much about it here until now.

That was the feedback my buddy got from his dealer last month. I was hoping that they would have built up some stock by now, in fact I specifically pushed out my 20k service a bit so I could take care of both issues at once. Bummer.

Does anyone know if this part is shared with the 4Runner?

How is the fit and finish on yours? My Texas build has some pretty noticeable bed misalignment, and another guy at work with a 2017 TRD Sport Mexico build has perfect fit and finish.

Mine crapped out on one of those 120°F days in early July after sitting in the sun for a few hours. Thankfully it has kept up pretty well on setting 2 with the cooler, more humid weather we have had lately.

So the third brake light leaks and they are on back order along with the A/C going out. Should have just bought a convertible with out a top! Fuck!

I believe that the resistors was the problem. The 2009 Tacoma was the worse year for the 2nd generation in terms of problems. According to what my friend told me a while ago, Toyota fixed the problem. Looks like the fan blades are cracking on some blower motors now.

All these parts on Backorder is part of their "Just In Time" assembly shit, they never carry any extra inventory in order to avoid paying taxes. We did that same shit and ended up having to stop production, order parts, have them flown in and special delivered, plus have to work Overtime to get caught back up, never understood how they figured they were saving money that way.

It's the bean counters sitting in the a/c all day. They do the same type of stupid stuff where I work. They just don't understand how production actually goes outside of their office.

    No cracks for now....
Checked mine last night. Could have pulled the cabin filter, but opted to remove the entire unit to clean it.
This pressure fitted type costs less to produce without having to cut a groove on the shaft and apply a clip like the aftermarket example tomwil showed. Cheap asses at Toyota... it's the pressure fit along with material choice thats causing the plastic to fail. Likely too tight.IMG_1485.jpg

No pics needed really. Just open the glovebox, take all the stuff out and remove the tray inside. It unclips at 4 points, then slide the 1st cover off and remove the 2nd inside dust cover. This should expose the filter element and you can pull that out. Once out, look inside the fan cage. The whole center section should be visible.

If you want to just drop the motor unit like I did, it's just three 5.5mm screws that will undo it. Just look under the closed glovebox and you can see two of the fasteners right away. I had all sorts of grit in there at the bottom, so decided to clean it out. The cabin filter didn't catch all of that stuff and it managed to seep down the edges of the filter.

I recommend dropping the entire motor. It is an easy enough procedure, and you can do a much more thorough inspection.

The video below is for 2nd gens but it'll show you what you need to know. Unplug the wire, remove the three 5.5mm screws, and pull out the whole unit.
