Trip report: Pretty damn good day today

If you were inside, im sorry for you.

Headed out this morning around 9:30. Made a stop at Alpine Shop. Very cool chain of stores for outdoor gear. There was a similar place back in Columbus, OH that I loved to spend money in. Glad I came across it. Anyway, picked up a Missouri Gazzetteer (best map books money can buy in my opinion for all around map). I have a few for other states and love 'em.

Headed SouthWest, trying to take country roads as much as I could. Made my way into Potosi. Cute town.

Took park road out of town and into MTNF (Mark Twain National Forrest). Spotted a fire road that wasn't on my list, so I turned in to get my feet wet for they day. Pretty easy, but the further I got in, the more overgrown it got. Not terrible, but if you are afraid of pinstripes, its not for you.

    IMG_20170729_120926.jpg

According to the map, there should be a creek crossing about halfway through the loop. That was my target. I made it almost to the creek when there was a log too big for me to move or get over or around... so I had to turn back. Got back onto P and found the other entrance to FR2397. This route had a good amount of dead fall, but it was small stuff I was able to push aside or drive over.

    IMG_20170729_123841.jpg

    IMG_20170729_124016.jpg

The good news is I made it to the creek. The bad news is that this side of the bank was washed out. I could make it down, but I would still be there if I went.

    IMG_20170729_124215.jpg

Looks like some quads or utv's have been down there. This was a re occurring find everywhere I went.
I headed back out, on to my next destination.
    IMG_20170729_125438.jpg

Next I headed over to check out some places by Doe Run Mine company. I figured their roads would be marked private so I tried to stay on public and fire roads. I headed down Wells Rd that was off of C. It was the main public entrance to one of their operations. I passed their operations building and went up a hill. I found an old church and graveyard. It was an old Baptist church founded in 1804! Someone was still maintaining the property and some of the gravestones had recent flowers.

    IMG_20170729_135022.jpg

I headed on further into the brush following the fire road. I eventually made it to a nice each creek crossing.
    IMG_20170729_140500.jpg

The fire road paralleled the mines main oar road. Eventually the fire road became impassible due to a large tree. Since the mining operation is closed on the weekends, I popped up on the main road and continued on to my next way point. Made it down close to where I would have been from the blockage. After looking where I was when I got home, I realized I should have gone farther. Oh well, next time!

Here we have the Tacoma in its native habitat. Look how it is relaxing in the bush while keeping a keen eye out for the pesky jeeps.
    IMG_20170729_141347.jpg

I made it to some area the mine must use to dump large aggregate. Pretty nice view. Can't really tell from the picture, but it drops down in front of the truck at least 25'.
    IMG_20170729_141538.jpg

I exited out and went into Viburnum and filled up on gas. It was getting later in the afternoon so I decided to not head farther south into areas I had pegged for exploration and instead start making my way back home.

Heading back out, I came across an old schoolhouse.
    IMG_20170729_154048.jpg

I continued on CR1 to Goodwater. I decided to take one last fire road, FR2594. It was rough going at first. It was really overgrown.
    IMG_20170729_155853.jpg

But after a bit, it opened up. It was definitely used more often from the other direction.

So it was a great day. It seems like this is just a very small sample of what is available down there. I must go back. We can easily make wheeling trips. Looks like tons of roads that can be driven. There were several spots where 4x4 was required, mostly due to steep inclines and loose rock. There wasn't anything that I saw that was technical, but I barely cracked the surface.

Alpine shop has a big swap meet every year. You can get some nice stuff awful cheap.

Looks like a nice day for you. So detailed!

Ran over to target to grab some stuff and noticed this Tacoma, figured it was kind of weird that someone traded in their truck with a light bar. I went over after and saw that the light bar was on a prinsu rack. Turns out it's a brand new truck with a dealer installed prinsu rack/lightbar with duratracks and spacer lift along with tint, kind of neat I guess

I've thought about it but the frame is mostly open with enough holes on the boxed parts to get it all. So I've never bothered with the wand, maybe prior to winter I'll pick one up to see what it's all about

Has anyone here installed a slimline hybrid bumper? Specifically, cut into the OEM bumper?
