I think this country needs a whole lot less protecting people from themselves and a lot more allowing stupid to hurt.

What happens as these vehicles age? I can't wait for a car to just lock it's breaks up on a highway because the collision warning electronics are failing... Just more shit to break and fix.

Yes, it will be warning lights galore. Eventually there may come a point when the cars won't go more than 5 mph if the safety features aren't working, like what new diesels do when they run out of DEF.

And I am not afraid of the CIA hacking my car, but I wouldn't be surprised if at some point law enforcement will be able to turn off cars that they are chasing in a high speed pursuit. The technology will certainly be there.

Thanks, yeah my other vehicle is a VW Golf R - so different implementation - I've confirmed elsewhere that it can't be disabled; radar-cruise or nothing. Good to know Toyota took a better approach to the implementation. This is the first model year on the Golf R with these features so I'm sure it'll change with time.

I agree with you 100%. However, I have to take the other side. If cars can stop by themselves, perhaps I would not have been rear ended 6 times. 1 drunk driver. 1 just didn't want to slow down. 4 just don't want to stop at the stop sign or stop light. Not sure how many more hits my neck can take.

So bring on the electronic nannies, please..

My thoughts exactly! Making it that much harder to mod. Let alone taking the stock computer stuff out may lower the resale value if I'm not mistaken

Then why buy a new modern vehicle?
You guys with electronic nanny fatigue and such excellent driving skill should just buy a retro hilux...

True. It's the guy behind me I'm worried about. There is two parts to this we need to realize.

Wonder the increase to the MSRP.

The idea that cars/truck were safer in the old days is just absurd. In 1987, there were 46,390 deaths in traffic accidents. In 2015, there were 35,092 deaths. Improvements in technology are improving safety and survivability in accidents. I consider myself a careful driver, but I will take any advance in technology that brings more safety with it. In fact, I drive a 2015 Tacoma and would jump at the chance to have one with all of the collision advoidance bells and whistles.

Exactly, it's mandatory a regulation by 2020 on all new vehicles. So Unless you guys are planning on never buying another new car, build a bridge and get over it.

My '16 Dodge Challenger has automatic hi-beam, adaptive cruise control, front collision warning, and also a smart set of windshield wipers, i.e., they come on automatically and the speed is adjusted when it begins to rain, and depending on the level of rainfall. I like these features a lot. I wouldn't mind having them in a Tacoma. But I don't want them bad enough to trade in to get them.

I like the system in our Subaru as well. One major flaw. System does not work in direct sunlight. Huge safety issue.

I think you need to go back to school. You can't compare inflation to the cost of a "feature", since that feature is also subject to inflation.

safety features are a struggle with respect to "allowing people to pay less and less attention to driving" all the way up until the car does everything. then we will have made it to a better place. so many people on the road have no business being responsible for the multi-ton brick of metal they are piloting. it will be orders of magnitude better when our technology takes over that responsibility. don't get me wrong.. it won't be perfect. there will be crashes.. people will die.. but that's already happening, in abundance. our technology can do so much better than the general populace

No offense, but you guys don't seem to be thinking this through...
While I can get behind having the option of some of these features as a convenience, it won't stay that way.
This is already obvious as some of these "features" will become requirements for all passenger vehicles in the next 5 years in the name of safety.

By the same logic, give it maybe 20-25 years and the government will be outlawing human-driven vehicles altogether.
And then you can say goodbye to your lifts, wheels, tires, and any other mods you can think of because they will interfere with the autonomous systems ...so no more off-roading, overlanding, etc either.

Go ahead and call me crazy, but we'll see how it all plays out.
