Put 255/85/16s on stock OR wheels and suspension

Or just screw all that, go back to stock wheels, and get 255/85/16s.

Also I meant I use that site to calculate backspacing, not offset. Sorry if that confused you at all.

 

So 25 has a better clearance than 10 in this situation. I was focusing on matching the backspacing numbers.

 

Alright so here's how I picture it. Yes, the additional rim width will cause your RIM to stick out 1.09" further, but the does not impact the tread position within the wheel well. Thoughts? Picture above on the left shows OP's exact tire situation, and picture on the right shows what it would look like if he were putting his 255s on 17x7s. Tire tread still sits in the same place, regardless of width.

 

Again, that's dependent of the width of the wheel. All offset is is how far the mounting holes are from the center line of the wheel. The more negative offset, the more it'll stick out.

 

I can't see the picture because I'm at work, but that doesn't make any sense. Maybe once I see the pic it'll be clarified.

 

I think this is making more sense now. I'm less mad at the tire place but they tried to tell me offset wasn't a factor so they were still wrong.

OK. Maybe I'm confused about where backspacing comes into play compared to offset, I'll look at the graphic you just posted to help make sense of it. Essentially what I'm saying is that rim width does not change the position of the tire, but this is assuming that backspacing is held constant and only offset changes with the new wheel. In that case, the centerline of the tire would only be shifted the offset 'difference', regardless of width of rim.

If the backspacing changes relative to the centerline of the rim, then none of what I'm saying would hold true.

Backspacing and offset are not two mutually exclusive things, and are entirely dependent on one another. I think you're confused, and it wouldn't hurt to do some reading to see if you understand it or not.

Alright before I clog up this thread any further, one last comment for clarity. Using your caculation (and customwheeloffset.com) I see the new value of ~1.09" more "poke out" for the outer most position. Doing some math:

Your new wheel is 1" wider, or 0.5" wider on each side of the centerline. RIght out the gate, your rim will stick out 0.5" further than before, assuming offset doesn't change.

Your new offset change pushes the wheel out an additional 15mm, or about 0.6 inches.

0.5"+0.6" = 1.1" or ~1.09"

So while your rim might be sticking out 1.09" futher than your previous rim, your tire should only stick out 15mm further than your old tire at the tread. (265 vs 255 width aside)

 

Discount tires manager just shrugged when I told them they would rub. Now that's customer service.

 

That's where I got my 285s mounted on my last truck. They were super chill.

 

3" in tha front for me and 1.3° caster. Everything else within spec!

 

Local guys got them to fit, however they were clipping against the bottom of the fender no stuff. I asked if my suspension was sagging and he said no. I'm fairly confident it's the 17x8 et10. I'm going to have them mount a 255 85 16 Monday and see if it makes a difference.

 

That's the same exact size, and won't make a difference. Unless you're talking about mounting them on stock wheels?

 

I think he means stock wheels on that tire. The thread title says it all @rnicholls you gotta stick with 255/85/16 if you want your tires to fit

 

Yeah I should've just done stock wheels in the first place.

 

Painted/powder coated stock wheels look surprisingly awesome if you're trying to change up looks.
