Dropped ECGS remover into front diff, help!

Had the back of the needle bearing blocked but couldn't get the tool to sit behind the bushing. Tried removing it and lo and behold my magnet tool broke off with the nut of the ecgs removal tool falling into the diff. I managed to fish to magnet back but now I'm stuck wondering how to get this piece out without removing the whole differential. Help!

 

Only suggestion I have is to try to fish it out with a magnet on a flex cable. Otherwise, you have to open 'er up.

 

Not fun and not easy but you're gonna have to drop the diff and open it up.

Well, this blows. Going out to buy a flexible magnet but I don't think the gap is large enough to allow it through

 

if you have strong magnet, maybe walk the piece up from the outside, then grab with arm or flex magnet. You know, like playing with magnets where you have magnet under the table to make things on top of the table move around.

Don't know of there are any internal lips that would block you from dragging it up.

 

I'll give it a go. It's such a narrow space that I'm probably blocking the progress of the magnet as I reach back there

I just rotated the shaft and eventually heard a clink. Popped drain plug out and after much frustration got it to turn and barely squeeze out

Yea I got way too lucky. I'm going to resume tomorrow, there must be a trick to seating that piece behind the needle bearing

 

Mine was difficult too. I literally thought it was impossible. I got it close and tapped it in then it fit in there perfectly

 

How was everything after that? I have the driver kit and I've read that the bushing is ok to stick out about a 1/16 of an old inch or so, then grease and tap seal in using a larger diameter driver. Is marine grease acceptable for these parts? I think I also have a lithium grease

 

I didn't use any grease. Use a 2" pvc coupler only to drive the seal in.... I rented a driver from autozone and it worked perfect for the bushing. Mine sticks out and everything works good

Take note of the seal orientation

 

I assume the seal goes with the indented area on the inside. The outside of it has a lip that goes around the cv axle if I remember correctly?

Then the bushing itself has one side that had a small lip around the diameter and another that's solid. I believe it's solid side out to protect it while driving it in?
