Got Wood?

Thanks for everyone's replies! I started this thread not as a woodworker but as a 3rd gen Tacoma owner using my truck as a truck and hauling stuff. But, a thread from fellow people who like working with wood is fine too! I don't consider myself a fine craftsman but I have been doing this for 40 years. I am still chasing that perfect, no mistake, no error finished product. I don't think it will ever happen lol.

Anyway, the Poplar was cut Monday about 60 miles from here. Last weekend I went out to the select cut site with a crew member and tagged this specific tree. Yes, somehow my truck made it down several miles of dirt and then logging roads! In my real job I design stuff for off highway equipment and harvesting is part of that. I know the guys from testing equipment with them a few years ago. It then went to a local mill about 30 miles from here that is owned by a friend of mine. I went down there with him and watched my tagged tree get cut. My lumber was too wide to go through the mill conveying system so we carried the wood out a side door to my truck, brought it home and here I am. I will put it in a small room in my house, run the dehumidifier for several weeks and then start the build.
So, the truck took me to the tree and the truck took me to the mill and the truck hauled the lumber home. Exactly what the truck was built to do! I'll post pics when I start.

Last thing... I cut everything long so I can trim the end checks when dried.

 

Slab cuts make great benches and counter tops. I made this bench from a yellow pine that was struck by lightening. It's lasted for 10 years so far with no finish. Good luck with your project.

I make them for friends, family and co workers. No shop yet but I could ship them out I guess.

 

I'd love to get into it some day.

I'm named after an uncle that died before I was born. He made this and it's in my living room now. It's been used for decades and there are some flaws now, but I'll never give it up.

 

Yeah I have determined that a flaw in my woodwork is a trademark of mine. Nobody else can see them but I know they are there. I built a table for my daughter. She said it was perfect! I thought, if you only knew...

Working with wood all the time is the only reason I have a truck and the Tacoma has been versatile enough for just about everything. By choice I would be driving a brown manual Mercedes diesel station wagon.

I thought only a 2nd Gen could go that far & off-road. Are you it's a 3rd Gen and not a Ford, chebby, or 2nd gen??
Just wanna make sure it's at 3rd gen '16-17 truck, If so this must be a first. I now have higher hopes for this truck. Hope someone else can chime in having successfully gone off that far into the woods n' got back home lol!

the difference between a wood worker and a craftsman is not that the craftsman makes less mistakes, it's that the craftsman knows how to hide them better and never, ever points them out.

Thanks! That one is actually Cocobolo Dymondwood. So no, it's resin impregnated birch dyed like cocobolo.
