    Vehicle:
    95 Tacoma Ext Cab V6 4wd on it's 3rd set of springs
Owned since new,2-6volt golfcart batteries in bed hooked up to alternator for camping, Air springs in rear,4-runner bucket seats with a centre console from a ford ranger, brand new cab floor all welded in. manual rear linelock for the brakes, rear diff vent tube extension, rear view mirror map light mod, ignition switch ring light from an mr2
I'm replacing my tank and am buying a Spectra aftermarket tank that offers 2 choices, the first is a "kit" that includes the fuel pump for 364.00 Cdn and the 2nd is just the tank for 299.00.

I have 95 thousand miles on it, and plan on keeping it and want to know if it's worthwhile to install a new (non oem) fuel pump while I have it apart, or am I worried for nothing?

as long as it is still working fine, I'd keep it, because OEM is generally better than aftermarket.

Just keep an eye on that tank.

I know they have been having Quality control issues and have had quite a few leak .

It sucks if your paying Labor having to swap a defective tank two times.

Ok, I was just wondering if it could be near the end of its useful life after 22 years, I just found out that I can buy a Denso pump for $30 more than the Spectra pump.

There's no labour cost as I'm doing the work but the tank's coming from RockAuto so returns will be a PITA if I get a defective one.
I think I might slosh some tank sealant around if I do instead. The cheapest oem tank I found in Canada is $700 + tax & shipping

Yeah, I understand your concern that maybe after all these years, it might be due for a replacement soon. So, if you buy another one, I'd trust denso much more than I'd trust spectra. It's better to pay a bit more to have a better quality product

spectra is made in china stuff while denso is OEM

There is no problem buying made in china spectra tank, as it is only a tank. Just check it for defects before installing, though

For a more complex part, with mechanisms, like the fuel pump I wouldn't trust a cheap chinese made unit. I'd go with denso.

for piece of mind, I'd change the pump while it's out since it's easy to get to at that point. would avoid non-OEM if possible for something like that.

You know Toyota doesn't 'make' much of anything themselves, right? And lots of parts go to the low bidder, but then is called 'OEM'. Like oil filters.

Unless one works in Toyota's supply chain, we are clueless where certain parts are actually produced. All we know is where some (most?) of the engineering and assembly is done.

oh yes, everything is made in china nowadays, even OEM, but there are some chinese made stuff that are of better quality than other chinese made stuff.

Depends on the brand and manufacturer, and the standards he wants the unit to be built to.

Denso has opened a factory in China, I suppose it's better than Denso giving a sheet of specs to "Eversmiling Pump Company" and walking away....;)

It seems the quality is hit or miss even having the quality control inspector shot does not help

That's it. IBM computers are made in China but it is just a geographical place where the plant is. There are plants in China for many businesses and it does not mean they are "Made in PRC" quality.

What we want to avoid is not disposable products made by cheap Chinese manufacturers who brands their products. In most cases they are rip-off (reverse engineered) band name products. However like in all products the devil is in details which can't be duplicated without extensive R&D which costs money. This is why even stupid plastic 5-cents trim clips are breaking easier and deteriorating faster than expensive 2-dollars OEM clips. But if this clip breaks during removal, it is not the end of the world. However when you have to disassembly half of the truck to replace 5-cents piece just because you did not want to pay 5 bucks for OEM, that's a different story.
