Hypertech Spedometer Calibrator on 2017

My daily commute is 11 miles each way, flat Florida roads, 35 to 55 MPH. I've been driving with the sunroof and windows open and the AC off (remember, this is Florida !), so that might be helping my MPG a bit

 

Does this fix both the analog and digital speedometers?

 

I did the same install. Corrects everything that needs a reading off the speedo.
Had to pull the unit and reset several times to gauge its "accuracy".

At one point, I made the tire size adjustment using the tire diameter in inches and made the truck behave differently and actually felt better in power and shifting, but overall speedo/odometer ended up reading higher. Best way to describe it is, it felt like a slight power increase with the ECT button on without the gears holding as long, but maintaining smoother granny shift feel without the ECT aid.

I finally readjusted to the P metric size rating and behavior seems the same as stock tire sizing. My MPG is all back to normal as I only went up an 1", so not too drastic at all. I tested this over a few days on routes I commute on daily and gauged its accuracy based on that. It matches with phone and garmin GPS units.

Here are some install tips:

You'll want to pad the inside surfaces of the dash with some kind of foam as this thing will rattle around if not well secured. The interface programming box also gets warm, so I wouldn't recommend totally encapsulating it either as it should be able to breathe a bit.
Another small noteworthy mention is be careful with the wires on the right side of the gauge assembly once reinstalling or reinstalled.

Important!!!!

There's a steel hangar bracket on the right side that the gauge cluster is mounted to and there's a sharp edge that will chafe and possibly short the wiring over time if you place it on/too close or pinch a few strands. This may lead to catastrophic failure of the whole ECU/PCM controls. Just be mindful of this portion during the install.
I ended up taping the edge of said bracket and kept wire loom tension away from this area. Things shouldn't move once everything is snugged back in.

The hardest part is figuring out the CD software. Everything else is pretty easy. Be careful and make sure to clock the steering wheel completely upside down from normal driving position and fully extend/ lower the telescoping steering column as this will give you the clearance to remove the cluster/ vent trim garnish. Mine had no printed manual and the manual found in the CD doesn't provide the end user/ installer any sort of tips for the install.

The only real tools needed are a 10mm socket with a 6" extension and some electric cutting dikes to cut the excess zip ties included in the kit. I recommend some additional automotive grade insulating tape as mentioned.

 

I just installed this calibrator and wondering what everyone has set their % off. I have it at 1.07% and it seems like its still a little slow. I'm going to bump it up, but when I run a speedo app it says I'm right on but when I try to calculate to the mile post markers I'm almost 1/10th of a mile off too short.

 

When i got my 33 toyo mts i got the calibrator and set mine too 32.6 and seems to be right on. And as I'm dealing with my new gears I've found out that also entering the old and new gears in doesn't do anything but messes it up. Just wondering has an anyone else see this also

So I just got mine in the mail from autoanything. It had the photo of the LCD screen as well as another photo of the screen by itself. When I got the box it was just the wires. Did anyone else have this problem?? Should I return it and order from somewhere else?? HELP

That picture is incorrect. You have to plug it into a PC to program it. Then it plugs into the factory harness. Watch the video in the post sbove yours.

Make sure you use the actual diameter of the oem and your new tires when entering the values, and your speedo will be spot on

 

That's just a basic stock photo. There are different t versions of the unit based on the interface in tbe particular vehicle. The taco one is just a simple black box. I just follow the instructions, it's easu

 

Yes I know how to do it, I'm the one that posted the video . Im asking if anyone has the LCD screen like in the photos. Or does our version not come with it at all.

 

Ok, ya thats a good idea. I was expecting to have the LCD screen then be able to attach that to the OBD2 port or something.

No it doesn't come with the screen. The photo is all wrong.

 

Ive had one intstalled for about 25k miles and it works great. Dead on with handheld gps speed. Easy to update tire size changes as well. I went from 33's to 35's.

 

Also, for the other people reading this thread that haven't done it yet, it doesn't come with the CD anymore. So you have to go onto hypertech's website and "download update software". And when you're actually running the program, you have to click on the blue link in the top right corner. Then you can update the tire size and gear ratios.

Interesting, Autoanything.com shows the CARB EO number, D-260-22.

I looked up this EO on the CARB website and found the PDF for it here: https://arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/devices/eo/D-260-22.pdf. The 730123 model shows up in this list, so a CARB EO exists for this device. However this EO was last updated on Feb 8, 2017, and it doesn't list the 2017 Tacoma, only the 2016 Tacoma.

Hypertech lists this device as okay for a 2016, but shows it as not for sale or use in California for a 2017.

 

It didn’t work for me either. Just click the Inline Speedometer Calibrator in the menu. Should pull up a separate screen, where you input the sizes...I recommend using the actual diameter of your new and old tires, this will make your reading much more accurate

 

So not the tire sizes? I input 265/70/16 and 285/70/17

I just entered diameter size in inches instead of tire sizes got same percentage increase so it doesnt matter

 

Got mine on today took about 5 min darn that was easy. Tripped me out though at first it said i was getting 8mpg’s then about 10 min into my drive it leveled out. Just nice knowing its all accurate again. Atleast i hope it is

 

FWIW, if you get a bunch of error lights when you install this, swap the connectors on the harness. My dash lit up like a Christmas tree when I first installed it. Turns out they had the connectors miss-labeled. Swapped them and everything worked great. About 5k miles since installing and still dead on with my GPS.
