East coast is going to have LOTS if white and green ash available for firewood . There are few alive anymore around me. The Emerald Ash Borer is annihilating it. Is this country-wide?

We also had some areas hit hard by gypsy moths a few years in a row that has caused large die-offs. Crazy

I'm shopping for a new wood stove. At the moment the choices are among 3 brands: Vermont Castings, Quadra-Fire, and Jotul. We're looking at large size cast iron stoves from each. No enamel finishes. Curious if anyone has experience with any of them. We have a Vermont Castings stove now, but it was made by a company called Federal Airtight that was bought up by VC, plus it is a design from the 1980's, so I can't really use it as a basis for comparison.

The reason I listed certain brands is because they're readily available to me, at some discount. I can shop other brands but my $ outlay will go up.

I'm shocked, shocked I say! that you gave that answer. They're not easy to get when one is closer to That Other Ocean.

Interesting. I wasn't nuts about the Quadra-Fire in the store, it seemed to be more show than go. Thanks for the Regency suggestion, I'll take a look.

Did you try the dealer locator on the Pacific Energy site ?

I'd vote for the Jotul, personally. I've got a lot of affection for VC; my parents have heated with a 70's Defiant for my entire life and it still throws some outstanding heat, but I haven't been impressed with some of their display stoves that I've seen in recent years.

    Oooh, shiny.

May I ask why you recommend the Alderlea or Pacidic Energy in general over other brands? I'm just curious as I'm in the very early stages of planning/building a house and would like a wood stove.

I have a Vermont Castings FA288CCL I found on Craigslist for $250. It takes wood up to 24" long, a bit more if you angle them. Yeah, buddy! Now that's a stove.

In my personal and work experience as a residential contractor , the Alderlea has been the best free standing stove I've used so far

What others have you used? What were the differences? What was good about the Alderlea, bad about the others?

Anyone have any cheap/easy firewood rack ideas?

I want to build a firewood rack for my buddy's property in upstate New York. Every time we're there we have to scrounge for firewood and it's always damp. Figured I'll just build a rack and load it up. Thinking just a basic 8' long U shape made from pressure treated 2x4s and throw a tarp over it. Figured I'd see if you guys have any other suggestions.

    Thanks

Maybe I'll try to find some pallets.

If you're looking for cheap it's hard to beat pallets and a tarp over the top. Just make sure the tarp doesn't cover the sides, or else it won't breathe and your wood will never dry.

I have pallets currently to keep the wood off the ground and they work and are free. If you want to get really creative, use pier blocks with 4x4 beams, email pier blocks per 8 ft side, then get pallets that have the notches on the sides and space your beams out to fit those notches. Use more pallets for walls and a roof, and get crafty with how to have a few posts, then slap plywood over the top pallets, coat it with tar paper and shingles.
So you buy pier blocks, 4x4s, tar paper, a sheet or 2 of plywood, and shingles. Figure $150-200 for a relatively permanent wood rack.

Pallets and tarp would be cheapest. Crosshatch the ends to keep the stack from toppling outwards. It's not stable enough to climb up on but who does that anyway. I've been doing it this way for over 20 years without a problem. Our stacks are about 20 feet long and 6-7 feet high.

    Yeah, we do that, too.
Or we use the bracket made to use 2x4s. From http://www.shelterlogic.com/shop/firewood/firewood-racks/firewood-rack-bracket-kit
