I can't tell if you are serious or joking in your post but the High Pressure Fuel Pump is up on the engine.

There are two fuel pumps on our direct injection engine, one normal high pressure inside the tank, and one extremely high pressure on passenger side, top of engine for the direct injection.
In essence, we have two fuel systems.

My truck has the noise as well since new and when i took it to the dealer they say the same thing "its normal" . That noise to me isn't normal and shouldn't be happening , its annoying. The Toyota dealers pretty much cant do anything for it and when I complain to Toyota customer service they pretty said "they back up there engineers and they noise is a normal characteristic of the truck, Goodbye" I called back a 2nd time to see if there were any updates and....... nothing. At this point the I feel as if the only thing we can do is voice our concern open case with Toyota so they can possibility make a fix for it. Fingers crossed. I love my truck but the noise has to get fixed at some point.

I'm with you. I actually can tell a difference in power output and performance when it isn't squeaking...

Just as a note, I have just recently had the chirp start with the warmer weather on my Tacoma. Which is the exact same thing that happened on my FR-S, that has a TSB out for the chirp. I had a new HPFP replaced on it for the exact same sound that my Tacoma is having. I will address the chirp at my next service, which should be about the end of July.

Let us know how it turns out - mine was written off as a "normal characteristic" when I mentioned to the dealer and honestly with all the larger issues I had I didn't push it at the time. Now that I'm getting closer on the other stuff I may go back on this. while I'm enjoying the truck right now, fuel delivery still feels suspect

I think a have the same thing happening with my fuel pump. It was loud enough for my wife to ask me about the noise when I was pulling in the garage last night last. I can hear it as much inside the cab of the truck. Has anyone noticed a ticking noise as well? It would be great to get rid of two noises with one part.

Yep. Got the noises too. One sounds like a bad timing belt (I understand it's a chain) and the other sounds like a suction noise usually heard when turning with A/C on. Heard them at ~6k miles.

It appears that the HPFP's on these trucks will soon be having the same issues that Chevy has with their 3.6L DI model engines. I'm sorry to hear about you guys' troubles with them. I feel like DI technology was released on vehicles in sort of a "Beta" stage. Where lack of research was done and instead was passed onto the consumer for testing. Which is in no way acceptable or tolerable.

I agree, definitely worried about how these fuel pumps will hold up long term. But for now the word is "if your pump sounds like squealing crickets...NORMAL"

The ticking noise has been called out as the sound of the injectors cleaning and would be present no matter what. The chirp is something Toyota was replacing fuel pumps for at one point but then directed dealerships to stop replacing them if they weren't failing (based on TW reports only, as accurate as that can be...). In my experience (and that of many others) the chirps do subside as you either increase octane or run ethanol free pure gas. I run mid grade these days, the chirps are still there but aren't as embarrassing as when I run regular 87. Almost nonexistent w/ premium, but hard for me to stomach paying an extra 10+ bucks with each fill-up just to reduce the noise.

I am at Stevenson Toyota West in Denver at the moment. I just had the same experience with the techs. I was told the chirping noise is "normal" and that replacing the fuel pump will not fix the chirping. The chirping is a direct result of the design of the fuel pump and is therefore considered "normal." Apparently when this issue began (3rd Gen) the dealership was replacing the fuel pumps only to have the issue come right back after installation. Toyota is now aware that replacing the component does not fix the problem. Toyota refuses to look into this issue any further.

I think what your dealer forgot to tell you is how many success stories also are out there and I did read of failures on Tacoma World thread and other sources. After detecting a chirping noise and identifying it to the HP fuel pump attached to the top right cylinder bank, I read the OP's experience with his truck and contacted him and his dealer. I took my 2016 TRD Sport to Rountree Moore Toyota approximately a year ago. The Tech advised me, the fuel pump was defective and needed to be changed as well as the actuator arm operating the pump from the cam lifter which was important to do. I believe the OP TaccoFister had the same parts in his truck replaced also. As a result, no noise or issues with the H/P fuel pump to date. I was shown the the warranty cost from the dealer to Toyota to perform this repair at nearly $1400.00 for parts and labor. It wasn't long after the "It's normal" memos started to appear at dealerships. Although, I had no resistance at the time to replace my chirping pump, if I heard that so called normal chirping noise when test driving the truck during purchasing it new, that would have been a deal breaker to me. Best wishes!

I wonder how Lexus IS dealing with this issue because the new RX350 makes the exact same cricket noise as well.

I've got the cricket chirps! Started just before 16k and had three tanks of regular through it. I usually run mid grade stuff. Gonna go back to mid and possibly an additive to see if it does reduce it. Pretty loud at idle. Cricket orgies under the hood. LOL.

I have 5k on mine and it started chirping for the first time for 2 days last week, at first I thought it was the belt squealing.

Mine started over the long weekend. Yeah sounds like a belt squeal, but shorter and a quieter. It got really noticeable when up against a tall truck, alley way, or enclosed area. GF never noticed it either till she asked me, "what's that cricket-like sound coming from your truck ?".
