Toyota: Why pay for resale value if you never intend to re-sell? (yes, I changed the title)

The amount of posts on what was really a thread poking for responses has been comical. I'm not sure why it gets people upset though. You talk about issues on the Tacoma lately and people seem to lose it. In either case thanks Bob for jumping in.

I appreciate the thoughts guys. In this case I mean if I am buying a vehicle from a guy with a clean title, the credit union I use wants the seller to take their clean title, go to the DMV and put a lien _ON THEIR_ clean title stating the credit union that is financing me is the lienholder.

THEN, they will mail the poor guy the check at some point after that is verified... Not a very transparent or re-assuring process. I know as a seller I wouldn't do it. If you guys can suggest someone besides Suncoast who can give the seller actual cash or a check in person in Florida let me know!

I hear you. I'm honestly so ignorant in terms of (many things, but especially) Ford, Chevy, Dodge and only want a manual... at this point it is probably Tacoma or Frontier... or give up on trucks altogether but actually use my truck bed on my acreage so would miss it. Can't get a jeep and use it like a truck.

The Jeep Wrangler (JL) will have a truck version in 2019. Not sure if it will come in manual of course.

If you want a manual the market is definitely slim pickings for a lot of reasons but I can get why people like them. I've had a few stick shift cars in the past. I always liked the auto offroad for personal reasons so I didn't get a manual when I got the Tacoma.

In my disgust at Tacoma prices have been pricing full sized Ford, Chevy and Dodge, just for the hell of it... These trucks in any kind of off-road config 4X4 etc... are running 45+ new... it's insane. I could buy a cheap house for that. Since I'm not towing and only doing light hauling and want a "nimble" 4X4 that can be versatile, I guess Tacoma or Frontier may be it...

I had country cousins group up and I don't remember any of them driving Toyota... but I do remember way more manual Tacoma 10 years ago. I also think the first gens are the prettiest but want something with under 100k miles which is impossible now in a first gen (Unless you don't mind a cracked odometer case) :)

Okay, all joking aside, why do you like the auto for off-road?

I'd never pay 45K USD for a domestic half ton. My 2016 Ford F150 cost me ~43K OTD CAD. That's 34K USD. The sticker was $52K CAD. It's a V8 full cab XTR 4x4 with a most of the options available at the XLT trim level and very similar in terms of options to a TRD Sport. That's the big difference IMHO between buying Toyota and buying anything else. If you get dummied into paying anywhere near MSRP on a domestic you'll lose your shirt on the truck no matter how good or bad it is for you.

For comparison my 2013 TRD Sport DCLB Tacoma cost $42K OTD new financing and interest included, and that was after the dealer knocked off a few K for a bunch of things. I know a lot of Canadians on here that paid $47K for the same truck after you include the interest and financing.

The used market is weird here. I've listed my truck just to see if I could get top dollar for it and had bad luck so far. It seems like lots of used Tacoma's sell from the dealer at the same price but not many exchange hands privately. I think the dealers can do a lot better job securing financing in terms of the amount of effort the buyer has to put in. That's worth more than the few K I'm willing to take off the price of my Tacoma. If someone offered me 24K USD for my Tacoma it would be sold.

Gotta say: I posted this thread hastily without much fore-thought at the end of a long day when I was angry... I work with 95% women in my job and it ain't fun at all listening to them all day. (no offense to any female members) Coming home and reading this is 100X more fun than I have all 12 hours at work. Hell, most of you have remained civil! on the internet! That never happens!

To stay on topic: Still can't find an affordable used Tacoma now, got some leads tomorrow, may call a dealership on an internet ad since they didn't post their price. For a 2013 with 75k miles... I bet they are going to say "26k, they hold their resale value"... pffeeehhhh!

The old Comanche would've been fun. Problem with a 2019 jeep is: is it still utilitarian or going to be blinged out for the mini-van set with a mandatory 10k in un-necessary gadgets?

There are a ton of pros and cons to each transmission offroad. The manual has lots of advantages at the end of the day too. I just like modern automatics because they are easier to work with in the mountains and hills around here. The attention you'd normally spend trying to match revs correctly in the mud or not stalling out on long ascents can be better put to use on finding the right line when you use an automatic in my very humble opinion. Of course if something goes wrong with my transmission or I need to repair it then the manual works out way better, like I said pros and cons to each side.

No one is 100% sure on that one yet. We will get a better idea when the JL hits the road in a couple of months. Of course it will have a lot of safety features to match the competition so I expect weight to be slightly up over the JK.

Yeah, Jeep is the only brand Fiat is making money on in NA right now so they are going to option the literal shit out of it. A truck is just the start of the ever expanding Jeep lineup.

When we walk into a dealer, we walk in with our pants around our ankles and put ourselves over their barrel. Doesn't matter who you are or how smart you are, they set the terms due to financing. They don't pay their bills losing money. They over-price their used Tacomas because 1. It creates a warm fuzzy feeling in people buying new Tacomas, as though they are a "great investment" and 2. It makes people lean towards buying new in frustration

Guys with cash don't go near dealerships except to make an F-U offer on something just to watch the sales-guy squirm and then leave... the real person to person price on these is entirely different.

I wouldn't go within 100 miles of a dealership except due to financing right now. Wish I had some US dollars free and not in my house fund for your truck, but not driving that far north, my current one might not make it. :)

Yeah, I'm lucky because I know the ownership of the local Ford dealer quite well. He comes with me when I buy a truck and literally it's a no fucking around approach. I know roughly what they made and what I left on the table so I've never been upset at them.

When I bought my Tacoma I bought it off my ex-wife. She was working in internet sales for the local Toyota dealership. She was not a great salesperson for a lot of reasons which she would admit looking back but in the month I bought my truck she really needed to get her sales up. She hadn't sold a Tacoma in March and that was a big black mark for her so she threw an offer at me and I took her up on it. In the end her boss was pissed, he basically let the truck walk away for $500 from what I understand (I received free 7 year warranty, free tire upgrade, and about $4K off from MSRP plus taxes and financing charges.) Looking back on it that day was basically my destiny to get this truck. I also met my current wife that week so it was a great week overall.

Just to clarify from earlier discussions I LOVE MY TACOMA. It's just quite simply that I don't get the whole attitude on here that they somehow don't break. My truck has broke plenty of OEM parts and so have plenty of other Tacomas and 4Runners that I wheel with. My personal pet peeves with the truck are; the front hubs (I know guys who swap them every 10K no matter what they do), front differential design (really, I've never had a truck that needed the bushing replaced from factory lol), and the exhaust routing (for an off road warrior why the fuck is the exhaust just begging to be ripped off by a stump). My personal favorites on the truck are; the TRD Supercharger (with full warranty over 7 years to boot), the seats (I know some hate them but they stay clean and seem not to hold smells from my dog), and the general simplicity of the truck for modifications.

From my understanding dealers get kick ass financing on used trucks because of their volumes. If they can push through a few hundred thousand K in trucks a month they get the preferential rates on some people who wouldn't even qualify for financing if they tried to get it alone. They of course do all the paperwork as well so the buyer literally just signs and drives.

I'll also go out and say that the Toyota Tacoma holds up better off road than the JK Jeeps. I swear you just look at a JK wrong and shit falls off lol. However when I've wheeled with Nissans and Hummers they hold up just as well as my truck though of course they have parts they need too. I haven't wheeled with a Ford in a while. The Ranger with it's torsion setup was just never great off road and you can't wheel half tons here, they are too wide. I'm looking forward though to the next couple of years as the ZR2 Colorados and MiniRaptor Rangers start to join us on our offroad antics.

That is a cool story. Even in the land of anonymous keyboard warriors it's hard to make fun of that. I don't think it helps that the small truck market (although Tacomas are now huge) sucks so much in the US. Tacoma is that girl at the party who is moderately attractive in real world terms, but there are only really ugly girls at the party besides her, so she looks like a 10. :)

A true Hilux, VW Truck, Landrover Defender or a dozen other overseas vehicles would give the Taco a run for its money here. Since the domestic manufacturers lobbied to kill imports here, what we got is what we got. :(

Know any girls who own dealerships that are single?

I love the last question lol.

The new Ford Ranger is going to run the skeleton of the international Ranger. If you look globally in tough applications it's always the Ranger or Hilux that works and plays in those spots. I'm very excited to see if the new mid sized trucks will eventually put pressure on Toyota to up their game in some way. I know Honda had forced Toyota to build the CH-R and new Camry because Honda's opposing models were eating at Toyota sales. If another manufacturer starts a making a serious small truck here and Toyota sales even blip a bit we might see a much better 3.5 gen truck from Toyota soon.
