Yep, but I do not like the Colorado design.

Sorry. I was wrong. Let me correct that.
    I'm not buying a 4200# truck with 159 hp.

The extra payload capacity doesn't offset the 3k# of towing capacity the 4 cylinder loses to most of the v6 trucks since they seem to be predominantly ordered with the tow package. Also I don't think I'd call better tires, better suspension, locking rear diff, power rear window, etc. bullshit, but whatever.

How many people in here buy an OR and then immediately put new tires/rims on and a new suspension? I'll give you the factory locker but other than that it's mostly fluff stuff. I have no desire whatsoever for BSM, rear cross traffic, bed power, Qi charging, sunroof, leather, jbl.... the list goes on.

Might I point out that there are rumors that despite the 2016+ I4 getting Dual VVTi over the 2nd gens, Toyota never actually updated the power numbers and you are making a much broader torque curve with a higher peak.

I drive a 2.7 Automatic, and while I will piss and moan about the 6AT's wacky gear ratio rollercoaster if you'll let me, you can ABSOLUTELY cruise at 65 without needing to come anywhere close to 3500 RPM, that's some pretty egregious exaggeration. I'm usually rolling at 65-70 doing under 2,000 RPM as long as it's in one of the 2 overdrives.

I busted out the gear ratio calculation too- If you're turning 3500 in 5th or 6th with stock tires and a stock axle, you're going 107 or 128 MPH...

True, but how many people here buy 4 cylinder then do the same things? All that does is eat into the extra payload capacity advantage of buying the 4 cylinder in the first place (if such a person exists who bought a midsize pick-up based solely on payload anyways).
Bottom line is on the sr5 there is only 80-115# of payload difference between the 2 motors depending on 2 or 4 wheel drive, so I'm not sure payload bragging rights mean much. Since you can't get the 4 cylinder in an OR it really doesn't matter in this thread. For the record though the OR is 195# less than a 4 cylinder of as comparably equipped as you could.

I don't believe this is correct, unless the OR is 4x2 and 2.7 is 4x4

Power problem solved... Everyone says there is no low end on the 3.5 and there is no sc option anymore, and since the "headers" are jank, turboing could get tricky. However the 2.7 is the same as the 2nd gen and people are putting turbos on 2nd gens so when the warranty runs out slap one of these on

If you're not towing anything & you aren't trying win any races, then the 2.7L is a great choice. I have an 2003 2.7L 4x4 with an automatic & I love it. Bullet proof engine. I have over 260,000 miles on it, basic maintenance & zero issues.

Ok, in the interest of simplifying this, the difference between the SR 4x4 with a 4 cylinder and the OR in 4x4 v6 AC form is only 110 pounds. Same SR to ORDC with 4x4 and auto is 230#, with manual is 250#. I guess Toyota doesn't make 4 cyl manual DC's?? I thought they did, but the brochure says no. I also think only Canada gets the OR in AC form(?). Dunno what to think anymore.

Heres where I got my numbers if you want to check it out yourself.

2.7 I4 - URD rotrex supercharger will fix all your problems if you ever get concerned about power if you plan on having it for the long run. I was gonna go this route on my 2013 prerunner until I heard the rumors of the 3rd gens. I had 25K miles on it before I traded it in and NEVER had a problem with it other than it being kinda slow.

Now having a 2017 limited v6...huge difference in power like many have said.

Spend on what you can afford is the best advice I can give.

    Good luck

i know a few people with the 2.7 and I've never heard anyone complain about it. The 3.5, many, many people on here whine about it. I think you'd be happy with either considering the description of your needs. It's hard to be a Toyota. My family has owned them since the late 70's. They have their quirks like most everything else in life. The 3rd gen in general seem to have a few more issues than it should but Toyota will get them resolved eventually. Good luck with whatever you buy.

Absolutely love my 2016 SR 4x4 5 speed! It's come a long way from day 1 with a good bit of money. I currently have 35,8XX miles on it and it's been flawless! Check out my build thread here and here is a pic of the truck!

Couple things - For one, rpm comparisons between 4 and 6 cyl bug me - the 6 is firing 50% more cylinders per rotation, so of course your rpm for a given speed will be lower. Second, in the 3rd gen 4 cyl MT, they made 5th more of a cruising gear, and I can't imagine breaking 2500 rpm to get 65 mph (I'll have to check again later, though)

EDIT: Checked on the drive in this morning. I have no clue where you got 3500 from - was doing 60 at 2600 rpm in 4th, and ~2050 in 5th.

I had an '08 regular cab 4x4 with the 2.7, and a buddy of mine got an AC 2.7 about 2010. He still has his and it's his daily driver and has a bunch of miles on it, and is still going strong. Great trucks, pretty bullet-proof and if you're not towing anything heavy (I used mine to tow a small utility trailer and a small boat, no problem with those) it's a very useful vehicle. Accelleration is not brisk, however. 0 to 60 time is around 7........minutes, that is!

If I didn't occasionally tow a trailer or sit in traffic on one of two bridges daily, I could see getting a I4 - M6 combo. You aren't going anywhere fast though. The V6-Auto makes good power and gets similar mileage. It's definitely and upgrade. The extra cash is nothing to sneeze at though. I could easily see going that route if things were different..... I'd probably go for an access cab too though.

The V6 absolutely stomps a mudhole in the I4. The throttle response might be a little iffy, but when the coals are poured to the truck, the V6 is way more powerful. For a stock pickup, it can scoot pretty good.

I would still go with the 4 banger if I were to re-buy today. There are still lingering issues with the 3.5, but one day they'll get it sorted. If it's still around in 10+ years (when I need another truck), I might go for it.

Like @moe2o4 , I've invested quite a bit into it. That's how much I like the 2TR-FE, as it's relatively untouched by CARB standards.

Yes. Let me know when you can hit 128 mph in 5th gear @ 3500 RPM's. Matter of fact let me know when you hit 128mph at all with the I4
