Pop n lock info needed

I just recently got a extang sold fold 2.0 cover for the bed , now I want to get a locking tailgate and it looks like pop n lock is my only option ?

PL5400 but I'm a bit confused if it fits a 2007 Tacoma TRD tailgate ? Amazon says the

$92 PL5500 , Standard Lock

PL5500 is the right one for my truck , BUT when I search for pop n lock Tacoma the pl5400 comes up which I like because it can be keyed to the ignition/door key of the truck

Is there a better one ? Any advice what others have done to lock up their tailgate?

Here are the Pop n lock choices. I bought the PL8540 direct from pop n lock. I pull on it very carefully when I open it. Don't buy the color matched handles. The paint quality is terrible.

Various people have posted on here that their pop n lock broke because it's made out of cheap plastic. I bought mine with that known, and just treat it very gently. There's a guy in here that is working on making a metal handle for them, but production is going veeeerryy slooooow.

One thing that the directions don't tell you. When you stick your key in (make sure it's in all the way) and turn it 1/2 turn, it makes god awful crunching sounds. After that, you're done. It doesn't turn back to the initial starting position. The position it's in after the 1/2 turn, is your new starting position.

 

I recall another member adding a string to the locking rod and having a loop hang out ever so slightly under the plastic bottom of the tailgate cover. That way if the lock broke in the locked position, he could pull the string to unlock the tailgate. Some heavy monofilament fishing line would probably be best as it doesn't absorb moisture.

Since it's a double sided key, it goes in either way. It's just that after it crunches whatever is inside the lock, then it's coded to your key and then the new starting position is 1/2 turn from the initial. When I did it, somehow I thought I should turn it back, but it doesn't go back.

 

I've had mine for 10 years. Doesn't seem all that flimsy to me.

 

Had mine about 10yrs as well.
When pulling up on the lever to open the tailgate, gently push the tailgate a little.

Dont bother trying to figure that out in your head, i couldnt write it in a way that made sense.
Just push the tailgate a little when u go to pull up on the lever. Itll make sense when u feel it operate easier. Becomes second nature.

 

Mine broke after the warranty period. The plastic internal tab that lifts the locking mechanism broke. I informed pop n lock about this and they stated that they have upgraded their locks from ABS plastic to glass-filled nylon. The new locks definitely feel stronger and the plastic tab is a lot beefier.

 

I'm really gentle when it comes to the handle, I don't let anybody but myself open it. My wife opened it once and I cringed lol. Just be easy on it, same with locking and unlocking it. 1 year of constant use and not one issue.

 

buy the pop n lock actuator I bought the key lock one and the handle broke so I had to buy a new OEM handle since the dealer didn't give back my old one and bought the actuator one and installed it myself it was a pain in the ass but well worth it since it locks when I lock my truck and unlocks when I unlock the truck

my wife did the same thing. she turned that key like she was doing a t1tty twister. I yelled "NOOOO"
my wife is not allowed to unlock or lock or open my tailgate anymore

ive had mine 4yrs now

 

Would I even use the key that much? Only if battery dies or something since it will be attached to my powered door locks.

Probably not that much, but I just hate having extra keys for everything. I wish I could have 1 key that fits everything I own.
