You guys are really making me think I should pass on the 09... Start the process over for an 11.

ill drive mine into the ground and I feel confident that will be a long time from now. If the frame looks good and the price is right I wouldn't write it off, but if you have the money to pay more for a newer 2nd gen after the redesign, I wouldn't call you crazy for it.

I bought my 09 a little more than 2 years ago. I think the mileage was around 65k when I drove her off the lot and I'm pushing 95k now without a hiccup. I've only done routine maintenance and she's been bulletproof.

Alright guys, here is another option. I found a 2011, 4 door, long bed, 4x4, with just under 90k on the odometer. It is a base not a TRD. It's about $1000 more than the 09 4dr, LB, 4x4 with 73k on the odo that is a TRD.

A 2009 TRD with almost 17k fewer miles which had the leaf spring recall repair or a 2011 base? I haven't looked at or drove the 2011 yet, but it looks clean on line. Thoughts???

I do go off road but not really for the sake of off roading. I go off road to get to a hunting, fishing, hiking, or camping spot. I'll do a little two tracking now and then but you can't hardly call that off roading.

I look forward to your input.

You don't need the TRD off-road package. It's nice and all with the locker if you need it but you probably won't by the sounds of it. My truck (TRD) is also my work truck so I don't wheel it too hard but I've definitely taken it down some rough trails like what you'll probably be looking at, if not worse, and I've never needed the locker yet. You can always add a locker if you decide you're going to get more hardcore. Get a good set of tires and this truck will get you there.

Don't let the leaf spring recall impress you, while it's an improvement, it's still useless. I have the recall leaf pack and will soon be adding a leaf and maybe airbags too cause the 4 leaf recall set isn't much better than the originals were.

It is a bummer that the 90k base is more expensive than the 73k TRD but I would try and see if you can wheel and deal a bit. Maybe show them the other truck you're looking at. But realistically for a truck that will last you 300k+ miles, 17k isn't much to worry about, I do that kind of mileage in half a year. Make sure it's had its 30k maintenance intervals done. If not, or they aren't sure that can be a bargaining chip. Still look at the frame. While it my understanding the 11's haven't had the same rust problems (yet?) still worth some research and inspection.

I'm not trying to sway you away from the 09 since by the numbers it's a better deal. I have an 09 and love it. The frame rust worry is not enough for me to trade it in since I treated the frame last fall and plan to do so every year since I live in the snow/ rust belt, but that worry is still there in the back of my head. If the frame issues are non-existent on the 11's (I'm not sure) I would say that peace of mind is worth something.

I guess something else to consider is the TRD does offer more perks than just off-road capability. Seats for instance. I spend a lot of time behind the wheel pulling a trailer around the county doing art shows for my glass work. I met another guy doing shows with a '13 base tacoma and he was saying how much his back hurts after driving a while. Turns out the base model has different seats. My back doesn't bother me one bit after driving for days with the TRD seats. I told him hey sit in my seat see how you like it and he could immediately feel the difference and wants to upgrade. That said I have a different back than he does and it's all subjective only you can decide what seat is right for you or if it even matters. And still, you could always put TRD seats or anything else into the base model.

Alright, now I have a line on a 2011 with 56k. It's a 4x4, TRD, double cab, short bed, 3 owner, no accidents, no recalls, it's been locally owned. I looked it over, I had the shop where we service our vehicles look it over. Other then some really touchy breaks, a little rust on the gas cap hinge, and an after market shiftier handle it looks great. Oh it also has a tonneu cover.

It's $1,300 more than the 09. I would prefer a long bed but a short bed is not the end of the world and the tonneu cover is a nice bonus.

You guys know Tacomas way better than me, it seems like a good deal, what do you guys think?

Just bought a 2009 Tacoma TRD-Offroad SR5 Pre-runner Double Cab, not a single bit of buyers remorse. It's a badass truck , great for off-roading , camping, etc.

I just called and said I would take the 2011 short bed. I'll post some pics after I take possession. I'm sure I will be spending a lot of time here searching the threads and asking for tips.

Thanks for all the advice and support.

My 09 has been flawless except for the A/C resistor which pretty much affects all Tacos.

Yeah the rust model years aren't as much of problem of you don't live in the snow/ rust belt but if you live where there's salt on the road half the year like the OP and myself, it becomes more of a consideration.

Lots of people are super happy with the short bed but I couldn't be without the long bed, if it'll work for you, great.

Congrats on the new truck! Looking forward to some pictures. This site is a wealth of information about our trucks, you'll like it here.
